How do TV stations edit dirty language in movies?

I was just watching some stupid movie edited for TV and wondered, as I often do, how they replace some of the 'offensive' language in movies for broadcast TV.

Such as "Flip that spit," etc.

Do they just take samples from elsewhere in the movie? Do the actors record different dialogue in a studio? Do they have voice actors that sound similar enough with electronic enhancement? Or what?

Hopefully someone here knows!

I'd guess voice actors since they sound off most of the time.

Someof the best are in Scarface and The Big Lewbowski, when John Goodman is destroying the Corvette he yells "this is what happens when you have fun with a stranger in the alps" or something like that.

The funniest part is when the camera's close enough to their face for you to actually be able to lip-read straight through the overdub.

at times they will have voice actors overdub stupid lines that make no sense. what are they thinking when they write these lines? other times they will actually have the actors / actresses record the new lines in the event there may be a possibility for appearing on tv.

i personally can't stand overdubs for many reasons. for one, the words they choose are lame, it doesn't sound like the actor, or the audio is WAY OFF. OR....the level of audio and the acoustics of the room they record the voice overs in don't match. that drives me nuts. listen for this when an actor walks away from the camera. since the boom operator isn't there to capture the audio, they have to overdub it in editing. you can tell it's a little too clean sounding for that brief moment since the recording environments were different....studio stage versus studio for dubs. i'm sure you know what i mean. this is very noticeable especially with older films and it drives me nuts. take the time to do it right!

I can't believe how stupid the double standards are on American TV. On one channel, you get overdubbed cursing, and on the other, you get rapper "pimps" talking about how low their "hos" are and how cool is it to shoot people.

Conclusion: American censors want you to be violent and misoginous, but only if you sound cool doing it.
