How Long Did It Take To "GET IT"

Get your mind out of the gutter.

GUITAR.

How long did it take you before it 'clicked' and you actually impressed yourself that you were realy playing the guitar?

It took me about 3 years and then one day - I picked it up and could actually play a solo that wasn't half bad. It's been a whirlwind of improving ever since.......

I'm just wondering how long it took you guys (and gals).................

You should be BANNED for the title alone

I still haven't gotten it after 21 years of playing

As far as solo's, I learned / praticed scales before chord numer one. I've always been a sort of backwards person I guess. (Oh god...here comes Cid)

I'll probably never be satisfied with where I'm at.

The closest I can think of that fits was about 2 years into playing when I learned "Dee" by Randy Rhoads all the way through and could play it with no mistakes. That was the first time I actually felt like I was accomplishing something.

Re: How Long Did It Take To "GET IT"

Same as Gurj here.... been playing agaes and still waiting for the day it all clicks

Sometimes I'll listen back to somethin I recorded with Audacity and think 'was that me playin that??' (that sounds a bit arsey but I hope you know what I mean) then I pick the 550 up and sound like I have bananas for fingers...

frustrating but I wouldn't give up for anything...

... well perhaps an offer of a bunk up with Fergie from BEP's might be tempting....

Count me among those yet to get it, despite trying since 1991. :-(. I (attempt to) make up for my inadequacies with excesses of gear.

Re: How Long Did It Take To "GET IT"

I remember the time when I thought Id got it, when I recorded a track with me playing guitar throughout, and it sounded **** hot, 10 years after that i listen to it and its meh ok !!! Im almost at the 20 year mark and i got so much more I want to be able to do.

But I understand what your saying. Nothing better than just picking up a guitar any where you go and just being able to play.

Steve Vai asked me the same question about 25 years ago.
I just told him, "Steve, I'll tell you the same thing I told Jimmy Page. It took me about 4 weeks but it may take you longer. Everyone is different, don't hold yourself up to my standards." I'm so proud of the little guy, he's catching up far faster than I expected.
