Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neurone Disease/Lou Gehrig's Disease (take you pick of name), is a paralytic disorder that attacks & eventually kill the nerves which stop sending signals to the muscles. Eventually the brain dies or the muscles around the lungs- diaphragm give in & people die of not being able to breathe. It can't be caused by anything other than the brain so the fog machine is bollocks. Too much happy juice for him!!!!!

3 geniuses have/had this disorder- Jason Becker obviously, Lou Gehrig obviously (the best first baseman of all time!!!!!) & Professor Stephen Hawking.

One of the documentaries on Jason Becker mentions that the root cause of the disease is still unknown (so it's not necessarily genetic) The wikipedia article says 5-10% can be inhereted, and that a gene was identified.

But the documentary also mentions the possibility of a bacteriological infection causing the onset, like for instance Lyme's disease. Also remember that Legionairs' disease is caused by an airborne bacteriological agent. Inhaling infected water spray/mist in a shower etc. can transfer the bacteriae from the warm water supply to the victim.

I'm not saying the fog story is true, but it isn't as strange at it may sound, having said that, the dudes you overheard, are unlikely to make such an assessment.

My uncle in the bronx has Lyme's disease, he got bit by a ****ing tick. The ****y thing!!!

I just can't see how ALS can be caused by an airbourne bacteria cos more people would have it & would've caught it by accident.

May sound terrible but i hate reading about Jason Becker cos it scares the
sh1t outta me that i might get it. Dont know of anyone in my family that has had it so there no worry there (i hope). Just goes to show you gotta live everyday like its your last, and play the f£ck out of your guitar.

Dude i saw a Guinness World Records show (the us one) a few years back about a flesh eating disease & its incureble, they have to cut out the infected flesh & these people had massive ****ing chunks cut out their side etc. It scared the **** out of me cos no-one knows how you catch it!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok a few issues here

ALS is not caused by bacteria. It is accepted that it is caused by a genetic disruption of the gene encoding the enzyme superoxide dismutase which is an oxygen radical scavenger. Oxygen radicals are bad and cause damage to neurons in this case-nerves which lead to the progressive loss of function.

The flesh eating disease is caused by a bacteria called Stapholococcus aureus. A particular strain is very virulent.

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria being injected through the bite of a tick.

Legionaires disease is a bacterial disease that is spread through waterborne methods which include sneezes but most commonly through contaminated hot water systems in buildings.

Stuff you hear in a guitar store isnt always true...

30,000 out of 200,000,000 aint enough for ALS' sake.

It's only 0.015% of the population & the nature of disease is to wipe out everything til there is nothing left.
