Question

Is it hard to learn Japanese?

Hi,

I'm considering to learn Japanese, but I was just wondering if it's really hard? In the sense that you can't carry on a conversation in Japanese after like, years of learning?

I've also been learing French, but I kind of got stuck after a while. This is also because I just didn't have the time after a while, but nevertheless. It seemed the course I was taking could only bring me to a certain level and after that I'd just be on my own. That's kind of how it seemed.

Anyway, any input would be appreciated.

Alwin

Re: Is it hard to learn Japanese?

On a serious note, its a difficulat language to master as they have a funny way of arranging sentences. Also there are inflection place of words that can mean slightly diffrent things. And as i remember there are lots of way of insulting people accidentally and in one sentence you might use a word and then in another sentence you might use the same word in english but in Japanese's you have to use another. there are also a lot of male female related words or pronunciations.
I kind gave up, but i think the language is beautiful when spoke by women.

I hope this help. best of luck

Re: Is it hard to learn Japanese?

Wow, that sound tough. French is also kind of complicated to me, but I get the idea Japanese is even worse!

I get the idea that I would have to just try not to think about things so much, and just absorb these large chunks of info without dissecting them. The same way I learned how to speak Dutch. I don't know if that makes sense to you guys but, nevertheless. Many times when I'm asked why certain things are said the way they are in Dutch, I don't have an answer.

Domo arigato, guitarnutteruk.

Japanese is fairly easy to pronounce, but is more difficult to write. For the most part, the words are generally consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel. Each syllable is consonant-vowel. That's one way to distinguish it from other Asian languages. But you're probably better off getting advice from one of our website members who live in Japan.

You know, I just remembered this girl on YouTube who has all these lessons in Japanese. It's very interesting. Check it out:

Re: Is it hard to learn Japanese?

ju jujitsu and i worked in the belfry pro shop and there were loads of Japaneses people in all the time and they were all having so much fun that it was infectious. also they seemed to love when you joke with them even if its at their expense, also because they figured that things would be expensive we made them very expensive in Japanese. they would say How much? and I'd say nana poundo 7 pound for a 1 pound golf ball, there faces were a picture and they'd just say it back like an octave higher "Nana Poundo!" really nice people, great fun loving guys and girls.

Re: Is it hard to learn Japanese?

That's a great story, guitarnutteruk. I've actually heard many good things about the Japanese people, in general. I've read Ibanez249's 'Where is the nicest place in the world?' thread again, the other day. Japan came up a lot.

I'm not thinking of immigrating, but you never know. Every place seems to have it's pros and cons. Even Japan.

Btw, I remembered this scene from Kill Bill just now. It's really cool.

I was supposed to travel to Japan on business a few years ago, but it never materialized.
