Nice photos.
phantoms, Your photo looks amazing considering it's from a cell phone. You should invest in a good water proof digital camera. They make some nice ones now that are not too expensive. Something like this...

1. Sun Storm
2. Paul R.
3. Spring 2005
4. Nikon Coolpix 3200--Nothing special.
5. This picture was taken a little north from Edmonds Beach. I love the outdoors! I was trying to capture the sun between the mountains and stormy clouds before setting. I hoped to capture more of the sunlight reflecting off of the crashing waves that day. This was the best I could get.

Rotti, I had been waiting on the newer cell phones (such as the Nokia N80) which boosts some good cameras to take on the boat. I've got to have a cell phone on the boat as a backup to the VHF and since I've got to have one I can justify tqaking it along as a camera. Salt Water plays havoc on electronics (and everything else). The N80 specs are 128mb SD card, 3MP, up to 2048 x 1536 and with on board flash. This is pretty impressive for a cell.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
1)Name of the pic. is "Lomelindi"
2)I am Baris SAHIN
3)It must be taken...Approximately one year ago
4&5)I got it with a Canon digital camera, powershot SD 300. This plant is called in Turkish "Japanese Rose" (if we translate it word by word). And everynight it opens its leaves and every morning, closes its beauty. This photo was approximately taken at 16:00 o'clock.
The word "Lomelindi" means "nightingale" in English. But also, it has "Singer of Night" meaning. It is a Quenya elvish word. As i have said before, it shows its beauty in the nights and hides where the sun is dominant. I find there is a slight romantism in this. So that i got it immortalize
Hope you like it...
PS: I have one photo about this topic. Can i send it or are we allowed to send
more?
Sincerly,

I call this one "Big-Ass Spider"
Taken in August 2006 while on a walk with my daughter.
Canon Powershot S50
I desaturated the tree in PS in order to make this mother pop. The pic really doesn't do her justice. She was damn-near tarantula sized! The full res version is more striking.

1.)
Title of Picture
= China meets Puerto Rico
2.)
Your first name, last initial
= Kenny F
3.)
Approximate date of picture
= January 29, 2006
4.)
A detailed explanation from PHOTOGRAPHIC STANDPOINT (include equipment, aperature/shutter/focus)
= Canon SD500 point 'n shoot. One pic with flash, one without. You decide which you like better. One brings out the color more, one shows the pretty waterfall in the background, but you get a softer focus.
5.)
A detailed explanation from an ARTISTIC STANDPOINT
Not too much artsy stuff here...I just like using the macro lens on my camera
. We were in El Yunque, the rainforest in Puerto Rico. This is called a 'lipstick' flower. When i snapped the picture, it was just a pretty flower...It was later than i saw that the pretty flower also looks like a chinese character.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
The second image there looks much better, imo...could do with a constrast tweak in Photoshop, perhaps, but it looks more natural without the plasticky glare from the flash.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
I thought the original intention of these threads was to have a PHOTOGRAPHY contest, not a Photoshop contest. Have we gotten off base here or have the rules changed since contest #1?

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
I was referring more to posts 20 and 21 that admit the use of Photoshop editing.
Let's see what you can capture with your lens, not your computer editing skills.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
Katrina, you should allow at least some minor photoshoping. Everyone who is even semi serious about photography uses it to some extent.
Kenny's photo is still legit IMHO. And post 21 is VERY minor photoshoping.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
Kenny's shots are 2 different pictures there, one shot with flash and one without. The difference doesn't really have to do with photoshop.
I have something to say about photoshop though, if you're not interested you can stop reading here.. :P :
Photoshop is the pretty much the exact equivalent of film processing/development (darkroom) back in the film days... Unless you're adding objects that weren't there with it, I don't see why you can't use it to process your digital pictures. It's the equivalent of choosing what chemical, tool, paper, processing technique..push burn dodge.., etc back in the film days.
Rotti is right, any semi serious digital photographers would use photoshop (or an equivalent image processing program) to process their pictures...especially if they shoot in a 'digital negative' format like RAW.
Actually if you shoot in jpg, it's pretty much the equivalent of shooting in say RAW and processing it in photoshop and then converting it to jpg.
Except when you shoot jpg the processing is done in camera.. and each camera manufacturers have different processing engine/parameters.
With that said, it's not my contest :P so if the contest says no use of photoshop then any entry shouldn't be 'photoshopped'.
But I just have to say something if people think any use of photoshopping makes a picture less 'original' because that's just not true.
Ansel Adams wouldn't have sent his negatives to Walgreens and developed/processed his photos himself instead, otherwise his photos probably wouldn't have been as good and famous as they are now. In other words if he were alive today and shoots digital, he would definitely 'photoshop' his photos.

Re: Jemsite Photography Contest #2 - NATURE Category
...there's merit to both sides of the photoshop debate. There's no harm in sweetening of the colors & contrast of a raw image...it's part of the process and god bless anyone who can figure out how the F to do it. On the other hand, if the pic of the spider in the tree knot is a layer of two different pics (i think he said it wasn't, but i'm using it as an example anyway), then it shouldn't be allowed.
I just want to to go on record, that i put up two pictures taken separately. No. editing. period.
I can't decide which one i like better. Maybe you can run a contest just with my two pics and decide which one should be enetered into the bigger contest against everyone else. Surely I'll win if it's just my two pictures
