Apparently my gf ordered a custom marc jacobs ipod for me that's due in april. I felt bad when I was bashing the ipods until she told me heh.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
I don't know if this has been mentioned but if anyone's sick to death of iTunes, I.E. ME, and wants to liberate thier iPod from it, there's a fantastic plugin' available called MLpod for Winamp, that allows you to send all your files through the Media library.
it's a bit earely in dev, but it does the job.
I don't know anyone music player preference, but I assume using winamp is less akin to selling your soul to satan...

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
I've had a 20GB Ipod for a while, and with about 12GB of music on there I was always spoilt for choice and ended listening to the same stuff over and over.
I just got a Ipod shuffle and it is totally cool - just makes you listen to stuff you forgot you had !!!

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
What is there not to like about iTunes? I've tried lots of other media library apps and found them all to be absolutely awful in terms of user experience. Even SoundJam, which Apple bought and turned into iTunes, was a totally over-wrought user interface that had too many different ways to do simple things. When iTunes came out, i was blown away with the power and simplicity of the interface.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Yea I probably wouldn't be using iTunes as I can't stand the interface either nor would I even be using the iTunes Store. I'll have to find some good alternatives. I've seen EPHOD or something like that which was pretty cool and didn't crash PCs as much.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
I can't live without iTunes, even though I don't have an iPod. All for one simple reason - it has realtime search. Wanna listen to Satriani's Surfing With The alien? Just enter Satriani Surfing into the search box. Boom - it's all there. With MS Media player you'd be clicking through the god damn tree view control. Plus, I like the design. What I don't like, though, is that iTunes treats my PC like it was its own - it installs two services that I have absolutely no use for. I just disable those whenever I upgrade to a newer version.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Winamp has that and more and guess what takes about 50% less system resources than the sluggish bloaty iTunes.
Winamp has a media libray that is far faster and superior to iTunes has the real time search your talking about and of course you can always get the iTunes skin like i Have then its almost identical but doesn't crash the computer and takes about 1 second to load.
The iTunes concept is great and i'm sure on a mac where users are used to waiting for stuff to happen its fantastic but the PC port in myopinion isn't all that good. With the ML_Ipod plugin i can now use winamp for evrything!

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
You know, I have 1G of RAM in my _laptop_. And I'm willing to sacrifice some of it to run a program which I like. I don't like winamp. I haven't used it since version 2, and from what I hear things have gone downhill there since then. I also don't find iTunes sluggish. It starts in about 2 seconds on my PC laptop (faster on my Mac). But that's just me, probably. I really like the way Apple designs their UI. They make the UI simple, but without dumbing it down. They rid the world of the separate "stop" button, and gave us an inline, easily accessible search bar. Their UIs are consistent and minimalistic, and that's what I like.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Since this thread has alot of discussion...
i've thus far ripped 30GB of mp3s from my cd/dvd collection (i ripped a bunch of DVD comedies and some music dvds). i've been watching the DAP market, and i must say the current lineup does NOT meet my needs whatsoever. I would like to have most if not all my collection available 'cause sync is a PITA.
iPOD: drawbacks include "Apple", too small capacity, WAAY overpriced given capacity and lacking in features. $300 for 20mb and no video support... ROTF.
Zen Xtra: the best fit for me... reasonable cost... 30/40/60GB but a bit BULKY.
iAudio X5: has promise and the iPOD sleek factor, but why only 20/30GB?
The market is looking bleak and seemingly catering to the "iTunes" crowd who buys and disposes MP3s and needs only a 1-5GB DAP.
Can anyone offer any advice or tell me just to wait until closer to xmas?

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
What features are you looking for that differentiate the three players you've outlined above? The only one that's really different seems to be the iAudio X5. I'm a little surprised they're only offering it in 20 or 30GB capacities when they're marketing it as an MPEG4 video player as well. I would expect that they'd have 40-60GB+ models available by xmas.

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Size is an important factor along w/ $. If i pay an extra $50-100 i expect extra features not just a trendy item. WMP would be great too (which ipod still wont support right?).
i'm probably trying to rationalize if the DAP is over $199 in my mind it's no longer "disposable" and I expect not to want a "better/smaller" one in 6 months.
i'm really just going back and forth trying to find a nice, compact player that holds all the music, but that seems 2-3 years away. Or if i have to SYNC one that can hold 50 MUST HAVE cds, and leave room for shuffling on/off the rest. I listen to ALBUMS not "random songs" or mixes if that makes sense and each CD i rip is about 80mb size. It seems this market caters to the idea of buying songs that you play over and over and then just replace with new songs and forget about the old.
If i pick the Xtra 40/60gb on paper, when you go to the store you see it's a bit clumsy (like the ipod photo) and there are these tiny, small ones that fit in a shirt pocket... but even those are a bit clumsy.
So i guess i'm also considering reasonably priced 5-10gb players too IF THEY'RE VERY SMALL. Anyone like the Zen Micro?
Basically i want a 20gb player the size of a 512flash player

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
ok, my dream DAP will have to wait but thanks to apples ever confusing lineup of ipods i managed to get a (now discontinued) 30gb photo ipod at $50 less than their $20 gb player
it's at circuit city waiting to be picked up. i guess i'll have to deal with itunes for a few years unless the ipod handles media player 10
btw apple has some good "refurbished" ipod deals w/ 1 year warranty at their online store... glen

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Calling iTunes experts..
Without editing hundreds of MP3 tags... how can you filter iTunes/iPod "artist" to show the recording artist of the CD not other artists. For example I have 5-6
Stevie Ray Vaughan
listings... some with double trouble, some with J.L. Hooker.
For example if i have 100 CDs from 10 bands i want to see only 10 artist in the LIST, not dozens and dozens of contributing artists.
Win Media Player handles this effortlessly. Very strange. All help welcome

Re: Just got my IPOD mini today!
Well, you could select all the ones you want to have the same artist, then right click > Get Info. Changing the artist in there makes it so all of them show the same thing, but you can't filter out the contributing artists, you have to just get rid of them.
