Kennydoe's Home Renovation

Hey all

Some of you know, we've been planning this extension for about 11 months. After months of bureaucratic red-tape, we finally got started today!

The first week is very exciting because stuff goes up very fast. We have a great weather forecast this week here in Long Island, NY this week, which makes for good building!

i'll post pics everyday, if i'm able.

September 17, 2007

Here is the whole house - we're adding a Master BR and Bath above the garage and den, which are the right side of the house in this pic.

I'm going to try to keep the same points of view in my pics...so here are the two 'before' from two viewpoints.

And this is what they did today.

The exposed portion of the house is now covered with a green tarp. Framing starts tomorrow! Stay tuned!

Re: Kennydoe's Home Renovation

We've got reno work coming in the not-too-distant future. Wish Mike Holmes worked in my area! Good luck, hope your crew is a good one! It's so sad that you really have to watch people these days. We were past the builder's warranty on our 1999 model house when we found out that there's no "pan" under the faux marble shower. It leaks now, and has to be ripped out and a new one put in, so the ruined linoleum is going, etc. total reno. Ba$tard$.

Make sure you wire in extra TV and Telephone jacks as well as in wall wiring for speakers !
You'll be amazed at how quickly the process goes.
Also, make sure you wire in anti ex-wife security cameras.
Seems like you'll need those for evidence down the road
I'm joking, of course, but who knows after all you've gone through.

Best of luck,

Bamm

Today they built "the deck". They're going up and over the already-existing joists, which saves a bundle of time & money.

The day started like this:

On the ground they built about 20 "I" beams about 40' each with 2x4s and about 10" of OSB wood. They loaded them up onto where the roof was:

And at the end of the day, the floor was set up...

Tomorrow the walls go up! Thursday will be roofing. Stay tuned!

WOW! a LOT happened today. Mind blowing, if you ask me. The workers were just coming up the driveway around 8:15am. I went out to play tennis until about 10:30 and came home to this...

About mid-day they'd already started the roof:

...and here's the end of the day before they put the tarp on:

No, the guy wasn't falling off as i shot the picture

I found it amazing that they could cut very different sized pieces of the roof joists, with angled ends and notches so it sits the right way...and THEN they'd send them up to the other guys who put them in place.

We don't have the windows yet, so they're just putting the shell all around the outside, but you can see where the outlines of the windows will be in the pics.

If they can get all this done in a day...what will it look like by the end of the day friday!?!? Stay tuned to find out.

Awesome stuff, I can't believe how fast they are getting it all done. I hope to do some extensions on our new place when we start thinking of having a second kid.

Also if you don't mind me asking, how much is this work setting you back?

I know you're all on the edges of your collective seat...

The progress today isn't as dramatic as yesterday, but they're boogie-ing right along. Today was sheathing, tieing and monster-gable day!

I'd forgotten about all the gables in there - they make a big diff. There will be some on the existing house as well to make the lines of the house flow better.

You get some different angles today, as well as the ones you've been looking at.

Here's the progress through the day:

...and after all the guys went home for the night, i stole their ladder and went up and wandered around for a bit ...Left & Right are my closet and her closet (hers is more like a 1 br apartment in NYC) the hallway in the middle leads back to the bathroom. In the foreground is the bedroom itself - the ceiling will be a cathedral in the bedroom part.

Here's the first look at the interior!

A big truck came today and dropped off all the roofing materials - they started sheathing the roof today as well - i've seen this crew work - both the framing AND roofing crews will be working simultaneously tomorrow! Pics of 15 guys up there will look pretty wacky.

To answer the question, it's more than a couple of jems worth of work.

Re: Kennydoe's Home Renovation

September 21

Had to work last night - sorry for the late update.

We got roofed today and they made progress with the gables we're adding to keep the flow of the house nicely, so we're not flat flat flat HUGE. The roof on the left side of the pics was supposed to get two small gables over each window, but we made a last-minute decision to make one big one instead. They're working on that as i type this. They ARE working today (Saturday), but i have to work all day, so i won't be able to take many 'progress' pics for you.

I haven't seen the interior since i took the picture i put up a couple of days ago, so I'm sure there's lotsa stuff going on in there.

Here's some pics from yesterday:

Re: Kennydoe's Home Renovation

Nice Pad man, I gotta get myself a new job.

I could never get a house anywhere near that size on my wage. My house is worth around £115,000 what would that get over there about 10% of your house I guess,

I look forwards to seeing the end result.

Well done
