That is the law here too. Live performance is essentially a free area.
If that live performance is then recorded to audio or video, and given away as a demo, in order to procure paid gigs there is probably not a concern, as monetarily it wouldn't be enough to warrant a lawsuit. If however you recorded the performance to package and sell, that may be enough on principle alone, for an artist to get involved legally. You would of course have to sell more copies than just to your Mother!
