Line 6... the name that has been bugging me for a while.
Line 6
.
Ok. Fair enough.
Fender: named after Leo Fender.
Gibson: named after soem guy named Gibson.
Ibanez: named after Salvador Ibanez.
Epiphone: ummm... don't know, don't care.
Line 6...
Line 6?
Will somebody PLEASE tell me why it's called Line 6?
I've been wondering this for ages!
Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid I'd have to go with "don't know, don't care" on this one too.

Re: Line 6... the name that has been bugging me for a while.
Named after Chuck Linesix* of the Hampton Linesixes.
I'm surprised you haven't heard of them, hell we've heard of them in AFRICA.
*That's Charles Linesix III
Hughes & Kettner ..... named after two imaginary friends of the manufacturer, apparently. I think I prefer the honesty of Line 6 (not to say I don't like H&K)

His name was Orville. No, seriously.
I don't know about the history of the name "Line 6" but I do know that the company was started by a bunch of guys who left Alesis, I believe it was. Perhaps there was 6 guys, and they left in a straight line.

I think I have the answer for you
Back when line 6 was a smaller company, they shared a building and frontdesk with some other companies.
The company name was derived from phone line 6, under which they could be reached.

Wow, that's awesome!
I never would've guessed that was it, but that's actually pretty cool.

Ugh.. you know your a guitar geek when you know that epiphone is named after the son of a luthier (maybe?) named Epi. Don't know where the phone bit comes from, he might have had a special feeling towards telecommunications...
Yeah that's right that boring, unimportant piece of information is in my head. Wow.

Phone is used a lot as "audio"
Think
phonegraph ( "drawn audio" )
vitaphone ( vita = lively )
telephone ( tele = distant )
so Epi-Phone.. seems reasonable

Re: Line 6... the name that has been bugging me for a while.
that's really cool. It's weird how when it was starting up, Line6 sounds boring and doesn't refer to music or gear at all! but... now that they're huge, it's fine. just like any band name... once you're known, you're known for what you are and not your name i guess.
