Macbook laptops

Hey guys and gals,

Both my girlfriend and I are considering upgrading laptops, and of course, the old question of mac vs pc has come up.

She's considering getting the 13 inch macbook, and I'm considering going with the 15 inch macbook pro (have to one up her haha!). We're both students, she's interested in mainly professional type applications (essays, presentations, charts, and some music editing and downloading mp3's). I am looking for the same, but since I pretend I'm a guitar slinger, I want to be able to record, and want a computer to handle all sorts of media files really well.

Someone must have some views/opinions/experience with either of these products, or some general info that could guide us. We're both nervous about switching, but macs have a pretty good name, so... Any input would help.

Re: Macbook laptops

I have a MacBook and love it. I've had lots of laptops over the years - both PowerBooks and Windows laptops (ThinkPads, mostly), and this is the best one I've ever had. It'll run the Mac OS and Windows, so you have nothing to fear. I say go for it. (Or buy my ThinkPad - I have no use for it anymore, now that I have my MacBook)

Re: Macbook laptops

okay, i have a mac, though not a portable. it is the most reliable machine you will ever buy. i really don't understand why every computer isn't like this. no viruses, no matter how many dirty websites you look at. and it comes with ilife, which contains garageband, iphoto, imovie, and several other applications. and i think the macbooks have an audio input, which you can plug your guitar directly into and record from a virtual amp in garage band. it also has iwork, which contains a powerpoint presentation creater, just under a different name, but it will play windows made power points. plus it's compatible with everything windows, excluding applications, as the macs use .dmg files as opposed .exe. all in all, it will do everything you and your girlfriend need it to do. just go to apple.com and read up on it. and don't worry about switching operatiing systems, Mac os x is the easiest os to use.

Re: Macbook laptops

Having weighed up all my options and spoken to lots of people i too am going for the macbook. I've always been a PC man but the time to change has come. The demo ones that i've used have been very impressive. My wife is a mac person through and through so shes chuffed. It also looks like incredible value at the price of 130,000 yen.

Re: Macbook laptops

More questions: what does everyone like about Mac's operating system? Is it easier, faster, etc...?

Though if you run Windows apps you are susceptible to Windows viruses. And, there are a few out there written specifially for Macs, so always take care and use firewall/antivirus. Rosetta slows things down, quite a bit, I've been reading. I'm a Mac user (still using OSX 10.2. and love it. Garageband is tons of fun.

Re: Macbook laptops

Still sounds nice though

You simply cannot beat a Mac. I've got a Dual core G5 desktop and a G4 ibook and I love them as much as my guitars.

Re: Macbook laptops

Macs are good, but the newest mac book pro has some issues with their batteries expanding (physically):

Re: Macbook laptops

Just wait until they release the ones with new, Merom processors. They'll have more power, 64 bit and longer battery life. The new desktop and enterprise Intel chips (Conroe/Woodcrest) tear any Athlon out there into shreds.
