Man it's hot in the UK at the moment !

I'm Cumbrian, I'm not suited to this hot weather. Both construstion sites I've been woking on this week have been hot as*ed dust bowls and tomorrows will probably be the same.

To top it all off I don't sleep well when it's hot I've got sunburnt at work today.

What are you guy's doing to keep cool ?

Seriously, get an air-con unit. They're about £250 from B+Q, and worth their weight in gold on hot summer nights, and just think, you can use it year after year after year

When I went on a tour of the UK in the summer, it was cold, depressing, raining and foggy 24/7, worst weather ever.

A friend has just told me to put a load of ice in a bowl and place it under my fan when I go to bed tonight.

I'm on a freezer filling , ice making , bowl finding mission !!!

Funnily enough, a guy in the pub told me that was on TV last night. If you can't find that lot, apparently a frozen bottle of water works.

Sorry I should say that if you use the frozen bottle of water you have to leave it open and leave the bottle behind the fan.

Cool !! That'll work for me !

Although it's a good job you mentioned putting it behind the fan as my instinct was to let the fan blow onto it.

*I only got a "C" in physics so there's a lot to learn LOL*

have a look to my location.... believe me, it's really "hot" here..
I don't use to go to the beach just to "cold" myself
Now, and talking about the weather, the A/A is not a good idea specially when you're sleeping. I use to connect the A/A 10 - 15 min before going to sleep and then I use a little (and silent) fan to move that air. It works fine for me.

does'nt air con give you a realy dry throat if you leave it on all night ??
I did this in K.L. last year and woke up feeling like I'd swollowed a porcupine.

Yes, this is why I don't use to leave it on all night, just the 10-15min before going to sleep, then I switch it off and just move the air with the fan.

Re: Man it's hot in the UK at the moment !

Modern air conditioning units here in the US have timers and thermostats. When the room reaches the desired temperature, the A/C unit will switch to fan only. You can also leave the vent open on the air conditioning unit to let the outside air in though the A/C, which should address the whole dry air / sore throat thing.

You can buy a window/portable A/C unit for anywhere from $89USD & up. Can't you run down to the appliance store and purchase one?

The ice & fan thing is similar to a "swamp cooler." Evaporative cooling. It can reduce the air temperature as much as 20 degrees, but is really only this effective in dry climates.

BTW, it's 82 degrees here in Michigan.
