Morality Question
The machine at Caesars Indiana credited gamblers $10 for each dollar they inserted because the software wasn't designed for U.S. currency, state police said. More than two dozen people played the machine before one gambler alerted Caesars employees.
Caesars lost $487,000 on the machine during that time, state police said.
Should the players return the money yes or no.

Re: Morality Question
I don't believe in gambling at all. It's an appalling waste of money. People who want to give their money away should just buy me guitars instead! hehehehehe
But gambling is a fact of life and the nature of the game is you win some you lose some. It looks like Cesars lost this time, but how much money have they made off of the losses of others already? I think the players should keep the money the same way that Cesar's keeps theirs when they are on the losing end. But better yet, don't gamble at all. Just my two pesos.

Re: Morality Question
Those machines are programmed to win a certain percentage of the time it's played. Those percentages are well about 85%, which gives the user a 15% chance of winning anything from something small (under a $1) to something big (like the jackpot). Each casino can change that programmed percentage as they see fit.
In other words, they win most of the time and lose very little. Just like FN said, "you win some, you lose some." This time they lost. The benefit was on the side of the user instead of the other way around. There's nothing wrong with that.

Yes, but they lost due to software error not because of their 15% margin. So, from the point of view of the casino, it's not fair.

Re: Morality Question
If the info posted here is accurate, then actually the odds were kind of even when the machines were broken 1/0.85
Thats a lot more fair than the regular chance you get so..... hell no!

Fair is subjective. Casinos are businesses, not charities. I like the Robin Hood spirit, but Robin Hood was the Prince of Thieves

Re: Morality Question
They allowed the machine on the floor, they are gambling as well, so although they win more than lose, you can well imagine that this story only increased the number of people playing those slots.
They made their money back in an hour...(maybe 2
)
If a person running the register at a small store gives me too much money in change, I'll return it, but in this instance they have no qualms about gutting you and allowing you to piss away what money you have, I wouldn't feel the least bit apologetic for keeping the money. In fact as soon as I saw the credit, you'd have to pull me off of that machine. I would feed that sucker coins like an old pervert eating Viagra.

Re: Morality Question
I'm a flooring contractor. if my error causes me to install a $2000 piecce of vinyl instead of the $500 piece I was suppose to install. would the customer be morally responsible to pay me $1500?
nope. my error, my loss. perhaps the software company should pony up.

Re: Morality Question
Its up to the casino and the company who made the machine to make sure the game is functioning properly, if its not, then oh well, $487,000 to them anyways is nothing and could be written off as a loss anyways.

If I was one of them lucky people, I would not think twice about returning the money.

Each casino can change that programmed percentage as they see fit
.
This is absolutely not true.
State Gaming Commission regulate what % of takings a machine should pay back (Payout Percentage) but even in territories where casinos can decide themselves I'd bet anything they keep less than 20% of daily takings.
In fact I just Googled it and the Payout Percentage in Indiana as regulated by the Indiana Gaming Commission was set at 92% in Nov '06 or each machine pays back $92 of every $100 it takes.

Re: Morality Question
$487,000.00 ??? That's not even worth filling out the insurance claim for those guys.... Hell, they'll spend more on the contracts to hunt down the lucky winners...Let's face it, the casino didn't even notice until some good samaritan brought it to their attention. Hello???? who was watchin the security monitors that day???
