Need help with storage for DVDs

I'm completely out of room for my makeshift DVD racks (I have two different racks full on opposite ends of the room as well as a box full of cases, how sad). I need something larger, and I need it fast.

I don't need anything fantastic. I'd prefer it not to be actually. I'm looking for something sturdy and fairly plain looking. For two reasons, 1) I will likely stuff it all in a large closet when I move and 2) something I can hopefully expand on if I need to. Really exotic pieces are not easy to add on to.

So far the best thing I found is this:
Target.com Quad Media Tower (in black)

Both for price and size.

I'm at 450-500 DVDs currently, and am in no hurry to stop purchasing.

If someone can find me anything else in that price range and capacity, I'm trying to find all my options. I'd definitely prefer black.

Re: Need help with storage for DVDs

you want a freestanding rack? black wood or metal? what size wall do you need it to fit on?

did you consider building your own by using track shelving, 6" brackets and pine boards & stain/paint that would be floor to ceiling on a wall (or part of a wall)? ...glen

Ikea has some nice Birch veneer cd/DVD racks, you can wall mount them and they look nice and are inexpensive. Ikea good...

Ikea.

Here's a picture of my Ikea desk taken yesterday.

This is what happened when i tried to move it out from the wall for the cable guy. Talk about a computer crash. the pieces are out on the curb right now. Ikea stuff looks okay, just don't expect it to withstand too much.

Part of it depends on how well you put it together

Re: Need help with storage for DVDs

That looks like Ikea quality. Although you really should glue all the joints.

I might build my own. I have all my CDs on black wood shelving supported with 1x1x1 concrete blocks. It's so cheap, but looks surprisingly not bad.

The wall I'm working with has easily 5' x 5' of space. It can be more, but I'd rather not go larger for looks.

I don't like shelves too much as I am dealing with cinder block walls. Without a LOT of holes and anchors, it's very difficult to get enough support to mount anything weighing more than 20lbs or so.

Cheap CD rack - possible solution...

i DID glue the joints, but they couldn't hold up to sliding across the floor with a 19" monitor and all my stuff on it, i guess.

Wish I'd sampled the sound of my scream when it happened.

Re: Need help with storage for DVDs

you can see some good ideas here:
http://www.storehouserock.com/store/OMB-1200.html

i would search out a shallow depth and tall bookcase.

those blocks are taking up space of 125+ dvds. you could easily replace them with 1" pine board cut, glued/nailed to create support. if you modify yours, also should rip the boards thinner to match the depth of dvds (no dust, less bulk)... glen

Glen,
I will likely do just that. The sight you see with my CDs was convenient for my last apartment as it was all raw materials from Home Depot. I had no way to do any wood working. Now I have a bunch of tools and plenty of space to cut. I'm just too lazy to fix my CD rack.
