New RIAA crap

RIAA Bans Telling Friends About Songs

LOS ANGELES—The Recording Industry Association of America announced Tuesday that it will be taking legal action against anyone discovered telling friends, acquaintances, or associates about new songs, artists, or albums. "We are merely exercising our right to defend our intellectual properties from unauthorized peer-to-peer notification of the existence of copyrighted material," a press releas More..e signed by RIAA anti-piracy director Brad Buckles read. "We will aggressively prosecute those individuals who attempt to pirate our property by generating 'buzz' about any proprietary music, movies, or software, or enjoy same in the company of anyone other than themselves." RIAA attorneys said they were also looking into the legality of word-of-mouth "favorites-sharing" sites, such as coffee shops, universities, and living rooms.

Re: New RIAA crap

This has to be a joke. If I read this correctly, then it means if someone opens a thread saying that they heard Vai is recording a great new album, they will go after them? Or even if they say I just got Vai's new album and it rocks, they will go after them? For what, there would be no damages. In fact, there would be the benefit of the free advertising.

Any judge with half a brain would laugh at this. I also couldn't possibly seeing artists being on board with this, since they know 90% of music advertising is through word of mouth.

Re: New RIAA crap

LOL. I don't understand what they could sue for? What would the damages be after you told a friend about a band? It would only hurt them to not let people discuss a new band. And very clearly any talking about a band or a song would certainly be covered under free speech. I think we must be missing something. Are they making it illegal to tell people where to go download music for free? I could see that being the case.

That I can understand, however it would have to be a taped conversation, hearsay is not admissible in court. And isn't taping someone's conversation without them knowing illegal anyways?

I almost lost hope in the human race (yes, even myself) for a minute. Of course, all was better when I scrolled down a little, haha, but still... I was furiously mad.
