No, if enough people complain about something the government will kiss their ass and change legislation.

Number of attacks do not outnumber the people that own Pitts and have never had any problems. They just get more publicity. The ban, pure hogwash and about as logical as the Salem witch trials. Any dog can be made mean. One "pure" cause to hide numerous injust ones.

What's the point of selecting particular breeds? You can train a nice family lab to be an overly aggressive bastage if you have the desire (and if you're d*ckhead enough)... breed's not going to make any difference, other than public perception.

While not exactly "pit bulls", some of the best-behaved animals I've yet seen were German Shepherds and Rottweilers.

The whole "Pitbull" thing is really pretty recent. They are a sort of bastardized branch off of the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier tree, which are very similar but slightly smaller. Like a lot of smart, loyal dogs, they learn what you teach them. And of course, if you breed crazy ones together over and over you get dogs that are prone to craziness (and a whole host of other maladies like hip displasia). A real AmStaff is a good dog, no question. Bright, loyal, and possessing incredibly powerful jaws. Not the kind of dog you'd likely find in the possession of gang bangers, though.

Here's the thing. If I were the dog I would've attacked you too. The poor thing was just trying to eat a puss... nevermind, it's too easy

"there are certain breeds that are potentially more volatile"

whether true or not. statistics and a lot of people would believe this to be true.

you would never protect against everything or enforce something like that for everything(every breed) but you can take certain precautions against those statistically proven more potentially volatile/'dangerous when volatile' thereby screening out the chances of a few..

you usually need permits for some wild animals and big cats etc, why? because statistically they are potentially more volatile/dangerous even if many are harmless as a mouse...

Pitbulls are some of the calmest and most loyal dogs you can find. The problem is owners who breed them to fight. I'd trust a well trained pitbull near a child more than I would most other breeds of dogs.

Rule number one of stats: correlation does NOT imply causation.

The potential for an end result does not guarantee an end result. Licensing only certain breeds is only going to contribute to the already-existing prejudice toward those breeds, and cause the same a**holes to find a different animal, only now they're turning a "nice dog" into a hellhound.

There's a huge difference between owning an exotic animal and owning the "wong" variety of household pet.

Re: Pit Bull just attacked me

I've known people with Pitbulls. I've been around them. I took some photos of a friends just a few weeks ago. She's georgous but I wouldn't want her as a pet.
Everyone likes to say it's the owners fault, it's the way you raise them. Thats what everyone says but I don't think thats always the case.
There is no denying that the dog is potentialy dangerous. More so than most other breeds. That coupled with the background and the news clippings is enough for me to say I don't want one. They are nice to look at though. Here's a few shots of the one I photographed.

sh*t!

and BTW - Jen, they have a little tiny kid. He seems more protective than to harm her.
Jim, our two Border Collies DON'T chase cats - that's a myth - a well trained dog will do exactly what it's owner tells it to do - you and your cat have every right in the world to feel unthreatened in your own yard - I know you may feel a bit lame that the dog seems scared of you now - but it will remember that lesson, and in some ways that is the only approach to teaching an animal who's owners haven't done so.

I think it's unfair to blame dogs in particular for any antisocial behavior they show - they are a direct reflection of the way in which their owners have raised them - if they have faults - look at the owners - you'll most likely see exactly the same faults. I'd hate to see any animal euthanased because of the stupidity of it's owner, but as many people here have pointed out, your cat can probably run pretty fast, whereas a toddler really wouldn't have a chance - you have got to report this sort of thing.

Pit Bulls have actually been banned in a couple of states here in Australia for similar issues - I feel sorry for people who responsibly enjoy these dogs, but too many idiots have spoiled it for them.
