Problems with my ears

hey,

I don't know if a similar thread exists yet. But I thought I just post it here to get some hints:
In the past I never had problems with my ears. I'm only 19 years and have been to many concerts and I never used ear protectors there and I didn't use them at rehearsals and did not even think we were rehearsing that loud, though many people said so. But then, some weeks ago I was playing with my drummer and when we stopped, I had this strange noise in my ear and it hurted badly. We stopped playing and it was ok soon. But at the moment I often have problems: I use now professional ear protectors at the rehearsals, but I still play much on my own and there I can't use it. I don't play very loud, and I don't realize that it "hurts" my ears or something. Only sometimes when I go to clubs or partys I start thinking the music is much to loud and it annoys me, though everybody else tells me, that isn't that loud. Mainly I feel that there's maybe something wrong when I go to bed sometimes: Then I have this noise in my ears and sometimes a "pressure" and it feels strange. And I'm worried of getting an acute hearing loss. Should I go seeing a doctor or can I do something that makes it unnessesary?

You should probably ask a Doctor rather than a forum of guitar geeks.

When was the last time you were at the Dentist? Could be Wisdom Teeth coming in.

Oh yeah, I should go to a dentist the next weeks, right

... I just wanna know if some guys know this things and it's something that goes away and I shouldn't worry... or some hints how I can protect my ears best while being on concerts or rehearsals and so on... I think, the prolbem is most doctors don't know this... And I`m gonna pay maybe this 10 Euro for hearing the sentence: "You don't have to worry, just don't listen to loud music and don't play that much." Cause this is, what a friend of mine was told 2 days ago...

Bingo.... go to an ENT specialist or an audiologist. You've probably had sound fatigue and didn't realize it, and are now getting Tinnitus. Go to the doctor..... once your hearing is damaged and you start loosing the ability to hear certain frequencies they are generally gone forever!

If you fell pressure inside your ear especially on your ear drum it could just be that there is a blockage between your inner and outer ear drum it's usualy caused by too mach wax or swelling because of an alergic reaction,
i have had problems with my ears because their was too much wax and a doctor had to wash it out with high pressure water.

Hm, k... Seems like it is better seeing a doctor. I hoped that it's just a more or less normal thing or at least nothing to worry about, but this doesn't sound good..

I've had this for years now and numerous ENT guys have failed to diagnose me correctly. I've not much time now, but I'll go into it in depth next time I get chance.

At 19 years of age, you've had plenty of time to **** up your hearing. I think you've got tinnitus - start wearing earprotection everywhere there's loud sound before you lose too much of the spectrum. People won't judge you if you do - in fact, girls seem to like my linked ear-plugs quite a lot.

My wife is an audiologist - go see one immediately before you do anymore damage!!!
While you are there, have them take 2 sets of ear impressions
Use one set to have custom Etymotic musician plugs made with 9 dB, 15 dB, or 25 dB attenuators (I use the 25's and really like them)
If you have some extra cash, send the other set to a company that makes in ear monitors such as ultimate ears, westone, etc. (I bought a nice set of dual driver Westones)

As far as rehearsals and gigs...... try turning your cabinet into a corner or facing a wall. That will help protect (term used lightly) you from the direct SPL in front of your speakers and maintain your tone too. I did that for years and in the studio too. I also got away from "stacking" 4x12 cabs.... it's less on the ears to let the sound blow by at waist height! Also check into a quality "in ear" monitor system for yourself.

OK, here's my 2 cents...

I've always listened to music way too loud, I would always rehearse way too loud (we used to cause cracks in the ceilings at rehearsal rooms and stuff).

I'm 39 now and I've lost 25% of my hearing right and 15% left.

Be careful with volumes!!!!

Yep, like everyone says, go see a specialist.

As well as being around the usual musician hazards (drummers, loud amps etc) since my teens, i work in construction, and often spend 12 or 14 hours a day in the presence of 50 tonne excavators with rockbreakers and the like. I've learned the hard way how easy it is to damage your hearing through over-exposure to loud noises.

At practices ALWAYS wear earplugs. 100 Watt stack pounding your ears for an hour or two, even on a "low" volume will do damage.

Ok, I was lucky enough, had a short visit and seems like I don't have tinnitus YET (I was told some things, also about the thing when it hurted for the first time, I can't translate, but I think it doesn't matter). If I can trust the statement, I should take ear plugs everywhere I can and I will maybe not get tinnitus. But I really have to be careful and I have to go to have ear immpressions. Good hint with the custom made ear plugs! Thanx, guys. You were all right
