Proposed sin tax on strip clubs in Texas

Again, the state of Texas has representatives pushing for a sin tax on adult entertainment. The proposed bill would require all patrons of strip clubs to pay $5 at the door, to "fund programs to assist victims of sexual abuse". Back in '04 it was for education. State Rep. Ellen Cohen, who strongly backs the bill has stated(paraphrased) that 'although strip club patrons do not contribute to sexual abuse, they visit establishments that objectify women, so it is appropriate'. Sure, it's true women are objectified at strip clubs. But regardless of how you spin it, they are two very different issues. Sexual desire doesn't really have anything to do with sexual abuse(in most cases), anyway. Aren't the men who patron strip clubs objectified as well? (I'm not saying they care) Instead of tits 'n ass, they become dollar bills. I'm not trying to argue the virtue of strip clubs, as I don't visit them. But this 'six degrees of separation' between issues, is ridiculous. If the real priority was simply funding programs for abuse victims, then why was the same vehicle proposed for education 5 years ago? I hate puritanical agenda in government.

I'm not in favor of taxes on morality... BUT, I could waiver in my feelings toward this if the money went toward something that would be of benefit to a greater portion of society. IE - education. You could put some degrading BS of a message behind it like "if we had better public schools, women would be equipped with more choices than a life of stripping."

It reminds me of my first computer in the early eighties (which was from Texas Instruments). We used to try programming and were constantly given the warning:

Error - Sin Tax error

It's consenting adults doing what they want and not breaking any laws. The government has no right to tax them to benefit any programs. Alcohol, cigarettes and naked chicks are just easy targets to raise money for politicians' pet programs.

I thought it was pretty funny actually.

On topic: Although I am against this sort of thing in general I can see that if the money actually went to a good cause then maybe it would be a ok.

It would make it easier to justify why you are going to a strip club in the first place: "But it is for charity!"

Personally, I have a reccomendation from my optician as it wil help me with my focusing skills. Seriously, that is true.

Re: Proposed sin tax on strip clubs in Texas

In my humble opinion, when you tax things like this, your intent is to make the people taxed understand that their "right" isn't really a right at all, but rather a "privilege" granted to them by the state. And as we all know all too well, it is difficult to take away rights, but pretty easy to take away privileges.

For that reason alone, people should be fighting this.
