Question for Jewish Board members.

I work for a jewish firm. I'm the only non jew here. I eat lunch with the guys a few days a week and see how expensive Kosher food is. I jsut ordered chinese food, and the "usual" for me was nearly 3x as much money as non Kosher. My question is, how the hell do you guys afford this everyday? lol

Seriously, I know from experience now that Kosher food is much more expensive then non Kosher. Why is this? And seriously, how can anybody afford to feed a family (ordering out) with prices this high?

If you keep Kosher, my hats off to you.

Re: Question for Jewish Board members.

I'm not Jewish myself, but I think that for an Orthodox Jew, it is a matter of being obedient to God's law and therefore they make it a priority. As for the money, it's all a matter of budgeting. You see what your expenses are and compare it with your income and make adjustments accordingly. Maybe the family has to do without cable or some other luxuries in order to keep kosher. I don't know. I think the reason it is so expensive is because it has to be blessed or approved by a Rabbi and it has to have special procedures for handling it according to Jewish law. I'm sure a Jew could give a much better answer than mine, but this is the extent of my knowledge on this subject.

Re: Question for Jewish Board members.

I'm not Jewish, but I know that Kosher meat is more expensive because it's healthier and about a zillion times better quality than the crap you buy anywhere else. Sometimes you see stores with a sign "Halal" meat. That's the same thing, but for Muslims. I know Muslims consider Kashrut (Kosher) equal to their Halal, but I don't know if Jews can eat Halal.
