Watched the Departed the other day. WOW. I really think this had to be Jack Nicholsons best.
I was really shocked at how great DiCaprio was. He really is a great actor.
After seeing the Titanic, I kida wrote him off. Then he did Gangs of NY and I kinda liked his acting. But with The Departed, he out did himself.
Also watched The Illusionist with Ed Norton. Another top notch movie.
Really surprised me how great the movie was.
Jessica Biel is really a beautiful female.
Not a recommendation because I haven't seen it, but I'm looking forward to seeing Lynch's Inland Empire. That is, if I can find out what theater it's showing at.
I didn't like The Departed (watched it last night on Blu Ray). It all seemed fake to me. Cops and that Costello guy were so grotesque - it wasn't even funny. It's sad that Scorsese received an Oscar for this flick and not for Goodfellas or Raging Bull.
Don't get me wrong, the film is masterfully directed and actors tried their best, but I didn't believe any of it. DiCaprio is too polished to play the guy he played. Damon doesn't look like a cop. Cops beat each other up every time they're shown. Costello handles body parts at the dinner table. The list could go on and on.
The only memorable sequence was, strangely, the short run where Costigan assembles his bag in a hurry - that's some masterful editing there, I thought "I should try this in Final Cut". Camera operator kicked ass too. Not quite Janusz Kaminski level, but pretty good nevertheless.
I heard he didn't get it for that film, necessarily. He got it for his entire body of work, under the guise of another. Apparently they were ashamed of themselves having not given him an Oscar earlier. Makes you wonder what that award is worth. They did a similar same thing to Alfred Hitch****. Well, if I were in their shoes I would have said thanks, but no thanks.
Spirited Away was a great film, I really enjoyed that one alot. I didn't think I would, but I loved it. I bought Howl's Moving Castle a few months ago, but haven't got around to watching it yet, it's on the list though.
I wen't to the cinema last night actually with a few friends, and caught Ghost Rider. We are all comic buffs who went, me in particular who owns every Ghost Rider comic. So we were all pretty dubious once we had heard the "poor" reviews of it online. But I have to say, I loved it. Definitely a DVD purchase for myself.
I am not a fan of Nicholas Cage by any means, but I thought he pulled off the role of "Johnny Blaze" rather well. And he certainly got himself in shape for the film, very cut and lean, so kudos to him for that. I thought the storyline left something to be desired, but it was a comicbook adaptation afterall. What are people expecting?
Overall though, I thought the special fx were amazing, and it was just a nice film that you didn't have to put too much thought into. And watching a film like that occasionally doesn't hurt anyone. Maybe me and my friends were all biased because of the love for Ghost Rider/Comic Books - but we all enjoyed it and would certainly see it again when the DVD is released.
"Spirited Away" is excellent, I liked it much more than "Princess Mononoke" to be honest.
Other great anime film is "Grave of the Fireflies". A very sad historical drama, if it doesn't move you, I don't think anything will. One of the saddest and most excellent films I watched, anime or not.

I don't know how many of heard of it but I saw a Japanese movie called "Battle Royale". That movie is crazy, sick, and depraved.
I also watch a lot of music documentaries (see first post in this thread) so I thought I would recommend the series "Classic Albums" from VH1. These are like "Behind the Music" for particular albums. I highly recommend any and all of them, as they can make any album seem interesting. The coolest ones are "Dark Side of the Moon" and "A Night at the Opera". For a laugh, watch "Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" or "Ace of Spades".
I am off to watch 300 today!!! I have been kinda looking forward to that movie for a while!!! I love Epic movies and I think I am gonna like this one a lot. I loved the old version called 300 Spartans! that one is in my collection and is a classic in my book. I always wanted to see a remake and finally my wish came true!!!
When it comes to Japanimes my favorite is Knights of the Zodiac and Vampire Hunter D!!! Robotech also known as macross was an early childhood favorite!!
I just saw Zodiac tonight. It was pretty damn good and, suprisingly, it had a lot of funny moments, especially from Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.
My wife was pissed because I told her that they never caught the Zodiac, and she yelled at me for spoiling the ending. I didn't get that, because I thought that was the equivalent to saying that the boat sinks in Titanic. Oh well, I'm sleeping on the couch tonight...
I thought it was terrible, André. I really don't get why so many people are so excited about it.
There's a second one too. It's supposed to be good, but after seeing the first one I'm not so eager to see it. You could click on the pic for a review.
Now here's an anime which I find really cool.
Another great Hayao Miyazaki film. You could click on the pic for a clip.
Yeah, the original 'Blade' film was far far better than the 2 sequels that followed. Blade 2 and Blade Trinity were not 'awful' films by any means, but I never thought that they compared to the original. The original is just one of those films that you can watch over and over again. Its just cool.
The comic books/graphic novels of 'Blade' are brilliant too, I have some of those in my collection.

+1... i can't get why they keep having nice-looking baby-faced guys to play those kind of roles. great actors of course, but they should also be "believable" in their roles.
if you didn't like the first one, then do NOT watch the second. it is terribly boring, for the most part it's filled with senseless and dull chatting that take you to nowhere, oh gawd... the only nice moment is the opening titles scene, with the cyber woman assembling.
i'm still waiting for the 25th Anniversary Blade Runner's Final Cut to be on theaters...
*Just saw Borat, pretty funny, the deleted scenes are even better IMO
* Lets go to Prison is a good rental too, kind of dark and funny.
**bonus I'm in it!**
Still shot below:
I'm the inmate on the far left.
I got Borat yesterday actually, but haven't got around to watching it yet. I wanted to watch it when it was released at the cinema, but never got around to it. I must set some time aside to watch the DVD soon. So many people I know have said its one of the funniest films they have seen in a very long time. And I was always a Sasha Baron Cohen fan anyway.
Borat is funny as ****! I haven't seen the DVD version yet though. I can't believe how Sasha Baron Cohen gets away with some of the stuff he comes out with!
