That's a classic? Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but not what I'd call a classic (same with Grumpy Old Men).
I don't watch many films these days, and if I do they are rarely new and rarely Hollywood productions. That said, I saw Little Miss Sunshine and enjoyed it. Just a slightly indie-tinged feel good road movie. I also saw Children of Men recently and found that disappointing, although it was well made visually.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
Cool
! A
movie
thread!
Yay!
Here's a movie I recommend:
Howl's moving castle
. This movie is directed by
Hayao Miyazaki
, who is a genius. The movie is a masterpiece. It's captivating, poetic, visually stunning, romantic, imaginative... It's amazing. By the way, I really
love
the theme song of this movie!
Other recommendations:
Princess mononoke
: As
Roger Ebert
put: "The Star wars of animated features".
La tourneuse de pages
: This is a French movie, which I think was only released a while back, I think only in the art house cinemas, and it's soon to be released on DVD. I think the title means 'The page turner'. This movie totally blew me away. I thought it was brilliant, and as soon as it comes out on DVD I'm going to buy it ASAP. The acting in this film is absolutely amazing.
Dead man
: I went to see this movie with a friend of mine a few weeks back. Again at the local art house cinema. It's a western, starring Johnny Depp. When the art house where we saw it played it, there was a lecture following the film by the Dutch film academy, about genres in film. They said that 'Dead man' is an allegory about violence in America, aswell as the film pleads against a lifeless world. It has
a fantastic soundtrack by Neil Young
, which is mostly a single, distorted
guitar playing
the same chords in different ways throughout most part of the film.
I'll post more recommendations soon.
Kind regards,
Myst

. Reason: Changed 'pleaded' into 'pleads'. It was a error. Changed 'It was a typo.' into 'It was an 'error'. Typos in the reason ('Çhanged' and 'a error'). Changed 'was an allegory' into 'is an allegory'.

I have been adding a lot of classics to my list:
Bourne Identity
Full Metal Jacket
Grumpy Old Men
as far as new stuff, I would have to say:
Running Scared
(lots of action)
Unknown
(good thriller)
The Return
(All right movie. More of a thriller than a horror as some have described it)
Monster House
(Kids movie. I actually prefer these sometimes)
Open Season
( Kids Movie.I'm not much of a Ashton Kutcher fan, but I have to say he did a real good job with the voice in this one.)
Grumpy Old Men is damn funny. Jack and Walter were great together
.

André

I agree about The Prestige being better than The Illusionist. The best movie I saw this year was probably Pan's Labyrinth. That movie was FANTASTIC.
I can't
wait
to see that one!

I have another suggestion.
Run Lola, Run
Foreign film, but with the girl that was in Bourne Identity.
She finds out what happens on 3 different time lines to her BF as he tries to play big league drug dealer.
Cool flick, good soundtrack

If you like Edward Norton then you should most defninetly check out American History X. He was incredible in it.

Maybe I used the term Classics in the wrong text.
Just some movies I hadn't seen in a few years that a lot of people seemed to enjoy.

Fight Club should not be missed either if you like Edward's acting.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
I didn't like The Departed (watched it last night on Blu Ray). It all seemed fake to me. Cops and that Costello guy were so grotesque - it wasn't even funny. It's sad that Scorsese received an Oscar for this flick and not for Goodfellas or Raging Bull.
Don't get me wrong, the film is masterfully directed and actors tried their best, but I didn't believe any of it. DiCaprio is too polished to play the guy he played. Damon doesn't look like a cop. Cops beat each other up every time they're shown. Costello handles body parts at the dinner table. The list could go on and on.
The only memorable sequence was, strangely, the short run where Costigan assembles his bag in a hurry - that's some masterful editing there, I thought "I should try this in Final Cut". Camera operator kicked ass too. Not quite Janusz Kaminski level, but pretty good nevertheless.

I heard he didn't get it for that film, necessarily. He got it for his entire body of work, under the guise of another. Apparently they were ashamed of themselves having not given him an Oscar earlier. Makes you wonder what that award is worth.
They did a similar same thing to Alfred Hitch****. Well, if I were in their shoes I would have said thanks, but
no
thanks.

Always a classic.
Not a recommendation because I haven't seen it, but I'm looking forward to seeing Lynch's Inland Empire. That is, if I can find out what theater it's showing at.
