love
the theme song of this movie!
Other recommendations:
Princess mononoke
: As
Roger Ebert
put: "The Star wars of animated features".
Spirited Away all the way!! Amazing ideas. I need to watch Mononoke again, without the horrific American dubbing, yuk. There's a new Miyazaki coming out soon, I'll be back in Japan for the release, how lovely. I adored a Japanese movie that came out a few years back called "Twilight Samurai" - a beautiful, gentle movie about a deadly Samurai who refuses to fight any more, as he sees that old world dying...he would rather be a father to his motherless children and yet the call of honour is seen by his peers as paramount in an increasingly meaningless context. This isn't flashy moves and huge budgets, just stark, poetic joy.
Hollywood's gems are so few and far between these days. I would like to see Requiem for a Dream...being in Japan, it's a little tricky to source this stuff. Pi was a classic, a top recommendation for sure. I've also been dying to watch Dumb and Dumber, superb hilarious nonsense.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
Spirited Away was a great film, I really enjoyed that one alot. I didn't think I would, but I loved it. I bought Howl's Moving Castle a few months ago, but haven't got around to watching it yet, it's on the list though.
I wen't to the cinema last night actually with a few friends, and caught Ghost Rider. We are all comic buffs who went, me in particular who owns every Ghost Rider comic. So we were all pretty dubious once we had heard the "poor" reviews of it online. But I have to say, I loved it. Definitely a DVD purchase for myself.
I am not a fan of Nicholas Cage by any means, but I thought he pulled off the role of "Johnny Blaze" rather well. And he certainly got himself in shape for the film, very cut and lean, so kudos to him for that. I thought the storyline left something to be desired, but it was a comicbook adaptation afterall. What are people expecting?
Overall though, I thought the special fx were amazing, and it was just a nice film that you didn't have to put too much thought into. And watching a film like that occasionally doesn't hurt anyone. Maybe me and my friends were all biased because of the love for Ghost Rider/Comic Books - but we all enjoyed it and would certainly see it again when the DVD is released.

Ok, fair enough. I might have misunderstood you there. Regardless, I always enjoyed the Bourne films - not as much for the plot and the acting, but for the fact that all the outdoor European shots felt very authentic, something you rarely get in Holywood films.

300!!!
I took my son to see 300 last night. It was a pretty good movie. The action scenes were outstanding.
The cinematography was neat. Almost cartoon like. I'd give it an A-.
Definetly worth seeing. A little bit of nudity in the show, so be careful if you are taking young kids.
This is definetly one of the bloodiest movies I have ever seen.

I read the new Miyazaki is sheduled for the summer of 2008, yeah. I can't wait to see it!
I love Miyazaki's films. He's brilliant. Spirited away is in my DVD collection. I
love
it.
I'll definetly check out 'Twilight samurai'. That sounds interesting! Thanks.
And
Requim for a dream
is a truly shocking, creepy film. It's a very good film. I once read that, when it was premiered somewhere it was given a standing ovation that lasted fifteen minutes.

He sure looks like he's 'on fire'...

. Reason: Accidentally erased the ' before 'Twilight samurai'.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
"Spirited Away" is excellent, I liked it much more than "Princess Mononoke" to be honest.
Other
great
anime film is "Grave of the Fireflies". A very sad historical drama, if it doesn't move you, I don't think anything will. One of the saddest and most excellent films I watched, anime or not.

Grave of the fireflies
I've read about that movie once in a book. I intended to go watch it, but I haven't got around to it yet. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
I don't know how many of heard of it but I saw a Japanese movie called "Battle Royale". That movie is crazy, sick, and depraved.
I also watch a lot of music documentaries (see first post in this thread) so I thought I would recommend the series "Classic Albums" from VH1. These are like "Behind the Music" for particular albums. I highly recommend any and all of them, as they can make any album seem interesting. The coolest ones are "Dark Side of the Moon" and "A Night at the Opera". For a laugh, watch "Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" or "Ace of Spades".

I must say... 300 is a damn good movie. Well just for the action. Lots of that. Kinda makes you wanna go out and fight after watching it.

Re: Saw a couple of great movies recently (recommend a movie master thread)
I just saw Zodiac tonight. It was pretty damn good and, suprisingly, it had a lot of funny moments, especially from Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.
My wife was pissed because I told her that they never caught the Zodiac, and she yelled at me for spoiling the ending. I didn't get that, because I thought that was the equivalent to saying that the boat sinks in Titanic. Oh well, I'm sleeping on the couch tonight...
