Smells fishy...what do you think? (long)

So the other day i get this email...the guy must've found my name on The Invisible Band website.

Quote:
Dear Kenny Friedman

We are Private Investigators and Intelligence Consultancy firm. My name is Mr. Ian Roberts. I

am a senior partner of McBride Consultants.

We are conducting a standard process investigation on behalf of Barclays Bank. This

investigation involves a client David Fredman who share's the same surname with you.

This is all about investments made by this client at the Private Banking arm of Barclays Bank.

This Barclays Private Banking client, died intestate and nominated no Successor in title over

the investments made with the bank.

Are you aware of any relative/relation who shares the same surname with you and who's last

known contact address were New York,USA and can you Establish your eligibility to assume

status of successor in title to the Deceased Please understand that we are constrained from

providing you with More detailed information at this point though I will surely do in my next

Communication, your prompt response may afford us the opportunity to close Further

investigation. Thank you for accommodating this enquiry, as I will gladly welcome your reply irrespective of established relationship
I replied, "sorry, can't help ya."

So the next day, i get another email from him...

Quote:
Hi Kenny

I have an offer for you

When this account was discovered two top executive's of the bank mandated me to look for someone who is a relative of David or who have same surname as David,This because if no one come's up as the next of kin to David Fredman, the bank will be forced to retire this huge amount of money into the banks treasury as an unclaimed funds

What if we put forward your name as the next of kin to David,so that the bank can retire this money to you

These two top bank executive's will influence the board to retire this fund's on your name on the condition that the will get a little cut from the total fund

If this is acceptable to you,i will inform you on how to proceed

Ian
So at this point, I'm saying to myself, this is some sort of scam. So i replied...

"wow!!

free money? with no strings attached? this is too good to be true!
where do i sign up?!?!?!

this is the best day of my life!
Kenny"

I figured that would be the end of it. A few hours later, i get another.

Quote:
Hi Kenny

The next step is to contact a financial consultant who will get you a letter of administration from the probate registry London indicating that you are the next of kin to David

The financial consultants contact address is {edited}@myway.com and his name is Alfred Breakwell

Remember that the consultant is not part of this deal,so write him that you want to know what it will take for him to get a letter of administration from the probate registry London

Expecting your swift response

Ian
So replied again...

"I tried sending email to alfred breakwell, but it got bounced back.
i want my free money! what do i do next?!?!?!?

please respond quickly, i am broke and my mom just told me she's expecting me to pay her rent (after 36 years of living here).
what a bitch.

regards
~Kenny

At this point, of course i'm just having fun.
And he writes back again...

Quote:
the alternative mailbox is {edited}@yahoo.com

Write me and update me

Ian
Just to see what would happen next, I replied to him
"alright.
i wrote to him

now what?

He replied again....
Quote:
Hi Kenny

That's great, what did he tell you is the cost so that i can arrange for the financier to pay the

necessary fee's or can you forward his mail to me

What is your phone number

Expecting your swift response

Ian
That's as far as it's gotten.

WTF is this? this guy hasn't asked me for any money or personal info other than my phone number...obviously i'm not stupid enough to give him any info.

Why is he so persistent? Did my earlier replies make him think he's got a dummy on the hook and he's just building trust before he tries to bilk me out of whatever? The guy has a yahoo address, which is obviously fishy.

Has anybody else seen anything like this before?

~Kenny

I wouldn't even waste my time with this. It's obviously some kind of scam. He mentioned fees in the last email, which I'm sure he'd ask you to pay before sending any money, which would never even be sent.

If this were for real, don't you think the bank would have called you instead of emailed?

He didn't ask ME for fees though. I have no doubt it's some kind of setup, but it's just just weird how far out of his way he's going before asking for anything.

Any funny ideas for my response to his last email? I'm at a loss.

Here's my reply to him...
"He said the fees come to $2000 US, but the funds have to come from my account for proof.
You can make the check out to Kenny Friedman and I'll deposit it into my account and forward the money to him.

I got one from "some dude in Africa" looking to unload millions in untraceable money but he needed my account information.

To amuse myself, I replied back that I was very interested and looking to screw the government out of their taxes. BUT my money was tied up in a divorce proceeding that should be cleared up "soon".

I kept begging him for more time, he actually got vaguely threatening after a few email exchanges. I've not heard back for a while.

Asses. These bastards need a .357 lobotomy.

That works ;-) Obviously a scam though. I would also have as much fun as a few emails can get. Tell him you have a friend in NY who works in the records department of NYC who will get you official NYC papers proving paternity, so you don't need his buddy or the two thousand dollar fee. You can even ask him if he would be intersted in blackmailing Barclays for giving out a dead person's money on forged paperwork after you get the money while you're at it. If that news got out it would destroy their private banking business, without question. Get the money, sue for more, and all that. Tell him you'll be in London next week, can he meet face to face? If so, can he get you tickets to a match of some sort (the more expensive the better) and book you a hotel room?

Actually, you could do what many have done in the past, and string him along. Tell him you'll meet in some public square. Tell him to dress up like a chicken and hop on his left foot to be identifiable. Of course you'll have one of the jemsiters who happens to live nearby take pictures from a nearby covert location and then share them with the rest of us.
