Strange computer problem... Blue screen error

For a while now my pc is getting this blue screen and it says something about the computer shutting down to protect my pc. And error has occured, check bios setting, etc, etc....
Strange thing is I've spoken to two friends in the past couple of days who are having the exact same problem. So is it a virus? a windows update gone wrong? or a major coincidence that we are all getting this same problem at the same time?
Has anyone heard of a virus or update problem lately that causes this?

the blue screen of death.. I dont miss those..

anyways a blue screen is usually a major error that pretty much is just crashing the system.

weird that y'all have the same problem at the same time...my experience is that blue screen errors are memory relared - if you can, swap out your DIMMs for fresh ones and see if the problem persists.

defrag and delete unused programs/files you don't need

I used to get those a bit with this computer and it was allways hardware conflicts, USB drives could do it (and they did it to my laptop as well) or the surver cad key I had plugged in the printer port. hasnt happenned since the last format tho I havent used a USB drive for a while.

Well my CPU has been running super hot for a long time. It's an XP220+ with the stock cooler and the temp was always high 60's (celcius) and sometimes in the seventies. I just bought a new Antec CPU cooler, installed it with some white heat sink compound and now I'm sitting at 42 degrees idle and 46 after playing "Need For Speed Carbon" for 20 minutes. Hopefully this will fix the prob.

yep, I had that recently, twas a hardware problem...

after changing the vid card and then the HDD I gave up a bought a whole new PC - much easier !

That won't do anything to stop BSOD's.

Funnily enough, I've been having problems recently too, and this is unusual because my system is generally rock solid. I wasn't sure if it was hardware or software, but I came to the conclusion that it's screwed due to overclocking the RAM and CPU too high. It's not a major problem, just occasionally annoying.

Well thats the thing. My pc has always been rock solid also although running a little hot. I'm far from being a computer newbie and it seems strange that I know several people who are all having this BSOD prob at the same time. So far it hasn't happened since installing the new cpu cooler but I'm still not totally convinced that it is not some form of virus or ms update issue.

Yep, I think it's strange how quite a few people who previously had good reliable systems are having this problem all of a sudden. To be honest, I thought it could be something to do with Firefox. Are you also using Firefox, by any chance? The BSOD only seems to happen when I'm using my browser.
