Taking care of a ferret.

I got a 3 month old ferret yesterday! Me and my bro named him Floyd, as in Pink Floyd. Well we got a sandbox and thats pretty much it. We also got some food. We haven't bought a cage yet, so he's just playing all over my room. I wanted to know any tips or anything that can help out? Should i definately get a cage (he looks so alone there)?

Re: Taking care of a ferret.

lol... a mate of mine used to keep a ferret in his room back in our boarding school days...

i believe that if you want to keep them tame that you shouldn't feed them meat. they have unbelievably sharp teeth. i used to know an old guy that hunted with them, too. now they were scary ferrets.

i'd be consulting google on this.

Re: Taking care of a ferret.

Ferrets are fine in a cage usually. If you let him out, lock him in a room with nothing in it. Seriously... he'll hurt himself or destroy whatever is in there. I almost lost my little guy into the hole for the sump pump. He's gotten stuck inside of springs (ie - under your couch!), he has almost had heavy object fall on him. Ferrets are like kittens that never grow up. They are super curious and want to play with anything they find. You have to be real careful if you let them out all the time.

Re: Taking care of a ferret.

Well i already checked the room and everything seems to be safe for Floyd. I don't think there will be any problems. But i'm gonna give him a week. If he does his business on the carpet or my sofa (un-reclinable) then i'll buy a cage. If he doesn't break or does anything innapropiate i'll let him free.

A buddy of mine lost his due to it chewing through the power cords in his room.

You can get it a larger cage and throw a hammock in there, water, balls, toys, etc, your lil guy will be fine. Ultimately you want him safe when you're gone, as sad as you think he might be, it'll be sadder to find him hurt or dead.
