I will say this, I've had an alienware desktop for 6 years and it has NEVER failed. Not one time.

I dont want a 17inch laptop
It renders the whole portabilty of a laptop useless. The quadro only comes in a 17inch laptop cause thats all it will fit.
Without any disrespect, I knew about that acquisition months before it clicked - I'm an enthusiast man, and have tested a number of CPU and video cards over the years. References available on request
My last post wasn't recommending Dell again, I suggested you look at Quadros based on your requirements. They are better for number crunching which I'm sure you know already but you don't want a 17 incher. Fair enough because portability is subjective, my idea of portability is a 12-13" notebook under 5 lbs but I have a friend who travels everywhere with his 17 inch monster.
Take it easy...

Re: Want to buy ALIENWARE Area-51 M15x Laptop any opinions
I myself am a Mac user, and normally I'd suggest the dual boot Windows/OS X solution for gaming (an Macs are ridiculous at graphics), BUT
Since you seem to like loads of power (which is hard to get with Apple without putting a serious dent in your wallet), I'm going to suggest Dell. They make some seriously good stuff, their hardware is dependable, and their customer service and support is decent (you wait forever and when you get someone you have trouble understanding the accent- and I'm Indian! But they do know what they're talking about, for the most part). Ever since Michael Dell returned, they've done some good things.
And I also suggest dual booting Linux, it's loads of fun and super stable
EDIT: Forgot to add, check out the M1530, a relative of mine has the 1330 and I personally think it's WAAAAY too underpowered, and that 13" screen isn't all that great for gaming unless you plan to game in the middle of a wheat field in China.
For $1500 you can get: 2.4GHz Core2Duo Processor, Vista Ultimate, 2GB shared dual channel RAM, 160 GB 5400rpm hard drive, and a 256MB NVIDEA GeForce 8600M GT video card. Pretty sweet deal imho. You know, if I had the dough and weren't so addicted to macs...

I dont ever Touch mac. I'm PC only, and I have no need for linux. I own software (paid for ) and that software runs on PC format, so there would be no point in Dual booting anything.
I'm sure all the laptops out there are great, but specs on the ALienware so far are stil better then all of them. My initial post was to get other Alienware users to comment, and so far only one has stated they had one for 6 years with no problems.
I'm definatly going to buy one...... and not because one guy syas so, cause I want the special lights

Re: Want to buy ALIENWARE Area-51 M15x Laptop any opinions
they are hit or miss. ive had some friends who had ones that were pretty solid, but I have also known just as many people who were sending their alienware stuff back in the mail to be replaced, returned, or fixed constantly. On top of that they are extremely overpriced, and I have heard nothing but nonperformance reports on dual video cards in their laptops.
Big "Meh" from me

I just love the way Alienware looks. Sure you pay a hefty price, but then you've got something AND it looks cool to boot.

Re: Want to buy ALIENWARE Area-51 M15x Laptop any opinions
i guess everyone just has different things they look for when purchasing
Looks are usually the last thing on my mind when purchasing a laptop (I get the classic Thinkpads as my main models and I havent ever had 1 problem).
Most my experience with Alienware is in desktops though, which I can build myself for 1/2 the cost so Ive always seen them as a huge ripoff for a few lights (that you can install in your own case if you want). Laptops for the specs you seem to be looking for, unfortunately you'll probably have to take your business to Alienware.

Re: Want to buy ALIENWARE Area-51 M15x Laptop any opinions
Sounds like you want the Alienware so i would just get it if i were you. I have always built my own workstations until the last few years. I buy Dell only and of course customize the hell out of 'em. I also have an M1530 with 4 gig ram and it's insane. 2 friends of mine bought Alienware machines and yeah, they look cool, but who cares about that IMO. Now they're a little sorry they dropped so much cash on them after seeing my gear. But, only you can be happy and if Alienware will make you happy, go for it and have fun!
