The cosmos is so vast, to think we were the only ones is silly...It really is a quite interesting thread
Just based on the vastness of the Universe I'd be very surprised if Earth is the only place that supports life.
According to latest calculations there are between 200 and 400 billion stars in our galaxy, The Milky Way and the only way to look for planets as they are soo far that we can't really just look for them is a way to measure light dimming of stars that favours finding bigger/faster/closer to the star planets.

If someone was looking at the Sun from a great distance and in the right plane the Earth might dim the Sun's light for 5 sec every 365 days - looking for that just to see if there's a planet is not going to get you closer to answering questions about that planet.

All I'm saying is our science is not advanced enough to find out if planets that support life are a rarity or if they're quite a regular occurrence which is why we can't even think about looking for life elsewhere but chances are it's there.

I agree with you. As advanced as we are, our science can't figure out how to stop war, famine, floods, hate, murder, racism, discrimination, illiteracy, pedophiles, rape, or to make Ibanez come out with a new floral jem and some neon colors in general. So are we realistically supposed to search for other life forms when we are mired in the sickness of destroying ourselves, and our planet?

I know there's to be no gear talk, I'm sorry I couldn't help it...

Cool huh?
Let me say something first im not saying this or that im saying what if? i cant convince anyone of anything and im not trying to, if i could what would be the point of reason?

cheers bahamut for your input mate, some cool stuff, i would like to add something to your above statment, i recently watched an great doc regarding big bang theory and how they are constantly adding to the equations so that the theory can still work and im not saying that it does or doesnt. BBT also have to now have DARK ENERGY TOO and something else, a lot of it went over my head mate, this is not my field, my field has cow **** in it.
anyway it was to do with the red shift readings of quasars in relation to galaxies and specific galaxies and how if the object were together, which they APPEARED to be, again i know nothing then how can they all (4) have different red shift reading. the red shift are to do with the speed at which they are moving away from us? so i was told, what do i know. i found this very interesting. anyway at the end they said so for the BBT to work they now need dark energy and dark matter and something else which i forget (hopefully someone else will know) so these 3 thing are theoretical.

so 96 percent or there model for the universe is missing! again according to them and for the equations to now work it contains 3 theoretical things making up the 96%. this may seem like im intimating my feeling on the subject but again I KNOW NOTHING i just found it very intriguing. this other group of scientist maybe off there rockers for all i know.

light traveling at 186 thousand miles per SECOND would take 100 thousand years to travel from one side of our galaxy to the other... are we there yet?

Funny how the poster of this thread found the shift key for the title. But couldn't seem to find it after that.

Many scientists now believe the universe is infinite, and that there may be multiple universes on different dimensions. Basically, this makes all possibilities occur an infinite number of times. On one world, I am president. On another, a rock star, bum, bald, fat, bodybuilder and so on and so on......

Re: WEIRD STRANGE OR THOUGHT PROVOKING SH*T

okay so i was all over the place with my last post, i wrote it, then went back and changed things as to not get ridiculed or people hating on me for a view i may hold, so im sorry about how hard it is to read.

Anyway heres a video someone sent me regarding fuel. i live in the UK and were about to go more nuclear, maybe in more ways than one! LOL and heres a guy burning water that sublimates tungsten in 3 seconds! (0-6000 degrees so ive been told, its pretty hot anyway) he's also used it to power his car, without the use of gasoline, now hes using it in combination with gas, take a look an see what u guys think. Should we use expensive hard to find especially in sunny england water that you can burn and then after burning it, it turns back into that terribly toxic stuff water! or nuclear power?

this fence is really hurtin my ass. im getting off it for this one

One track mind . . .

that comment should put the "our little lives are so insignificant" crowd to rest. LOL.

Our little lives are actually significant to us. What is insignificant is whether life exists billions of miles away

Interesting, never knew that the sun is so insignificantly small compared to Antares. Imagine how huge this universe is? We humans are practically nothing....

Heres something to wrap your brain around, if Strings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_%28physics%29) exist, A string compared to an atom would be the size of 1 oak tree as compared to our entire Galaxy...

Re: WEIRD STRANGE OR THOUGHT PROVOKING SH*T

Is Anares the 'Pistol Star'? That one has a diameter the size of our Earth's orbit of the Sun...

The universe really is a fascinating place. I could think for days about this stuff. I was reading about a gamma ray explosion which went emitted as much energy as one million trillion times our Sun's...
