hi all, saw these on the web and just thought id post them, i know
this place (the universe/underverse) is a big one, but this kinda
put things in perspective. (i imagine i will cop some stick for this but hey)











































just a few of the proported hundreds of millions of galaxies.


It would be nice to have 1 picture for all but you get the idea, rest assured in the 100 billion stars that make up our galaxy WE and WE alone are the only life PERIOD? i did have a great final picture of a Hubble deep field? galaxy photo but it was WAY too big. there will probably be a lot of you guy on here who already know this or are far far more versed in any of this stuff than me, i just figured id post it anyway.

please contribute anything strange or bizarre or thought provoking
or just stuff that makes you go uh? or facts that you think are
just plain weird or totally amazing. you all have a good one.

Did you know the Earth revolves around the sun at a speed of just over 18 miles per second?

The solar system revolves around the center of the galaxy at a speed of 155 miles per second?

The galaxy is currently hurtling towards Andromeda at a speed that they can't even measure yet?

(I have always found it amazing that while human time is measured on the basis that our planet arrives at the same place in the cosmos every 365 days, we've never actually been at the same place since time began being measured)

The solar wind pounds us with gamma radiation every minute at roughly 270 miles per second?

There are over 916 known asteroids in this solar system that could pound our little planet into oblivion at any given moment? And astronomers are discovering more all the time? One might actually hit Mars this month.

96% of the universe is made up of matter that is absolutely invisible. Scientists don't even know what it is! They call it "Dark Matter".

The hubble deep field you refered to is a picture from so far away that the Earth didn't even EXIST when it existed. Thats how long the light necessary to take the photograph took to get to Earth. (For consistancy, light travels at 186,000 miles per second. A light year is the distance light travels in one year. For perspective, the Earth is 7,926.41 miles in diameter at the equator. The sun is 96,000,000 miles away. Light from the Sun takes about 8 seconds to get here) Man I'm a nerd...

my first thought after seeing those photos was... if the Earth was as small as Pluto would it still cost as much to ship a guitar from the US to England?

Nutter - cool pics. That really puts my simple day to day issues in perspective once I see the scale of things.

I have no idea what is in the last pic, are those stars? I think I've heard of Antares and possibly have seen it but I know very little about astronomy.

Is the asteroid that is going to hit Mars a big one that might have some serious impact on that planet's future?

Not sure if you're asking how can some people believe we're the only life in the Galaxy (or Universe) or if you're saying we are.
I hope it's not the second because your statement implies you can prove it.

I think he was questioning those who feel we are the only life. However it would not surprise me if we were the only life form out there, as all the variables have to fall into place in order to successfully sustain life for a long period of time (water-food-air-evolution)...It also would not surprise me to find out we were one of thousands of advanced life forms out there, with earth being at the bottom level of the scale, of course. The cosmos is so vast, to think we were the only ones is silly...It really is a quite interesting thread
