What's sadder: Relic or tattoo

Having just watched the youtube installments of Dream Theater's Score documentary I had to laugh at the guys in the queue to see the show showing off their DT tatoos.

Now there's being a fan, being a fanboy, then there's obsessive nutcase

I have often though that these new relic'd guitars like the SRV strat etc are for the most devoted (and rich) of fan but getting tattoos of the band etc is IMO worse although a lot cheaper ;-)

Apologies to those here with tattoos of bands artwork etc. but own up who has them and why ?

Or what about that chic on the Brett Michaels show that tattoed his name on the back of her neck?

There is the phrase "Wearing your influences on your sleeve.", what's wrong with wearing them on your skin instead?

That being said, on the back of my left calf I've got the Pearl Jam stick figure guy about 12" tall... Got it in late 1991 and have never regretted it.

A tattoo may be cheaper today, but you'll pay for it for the rest of your life.

I've several tattoos, but I don't think I'll be getting a big VH, STP or DT on my body any time soon. That being said, I've considered getting the "Hammer Guy" from Van Halen's '84 tour tattooed, but not because I am an uber Halen freak, only because I think it is a pretty cool character.

I hate it when people get tattoos of bands. Tattoos are an art form, and there's nothing artistic of advertising your favorite band on your skin.

Re: What's sadder: Relic or tattoo

I also say "to each his or her own" when it comes to something as personal as a tattoo.

Don't most people with tattoos have them because the image represents something important or significant in their life? And if the tattooed person really likes the music of a certain artist or band, well then it's his body, he can express his preference with a tattoo. And who am I to say that's "sad" or overly devoted fan worship? I definitely think some things are rather superficial and not worthy of their image being permanently affixed to the body, but if someone wants to get their favorite breakfast cereal cartoon character tattooed on their backside, well, more power to them.

I have no tattoos yet but I there is a really good atrist in my town and have thought about it for while now. Maybe I will someday.

I think the saddest is people that are concerned with what other people choose to spend their own money on

Re: What's sadder: Relic or tattoo

I have only 1 tattoo and it is my own artwork, and very glam 80's but for me I wanted to be able to hide it in case I ever needed to get a real job. So mine is on my right shoulder. where a short sleeve tee covers it. Also I waited until I was 23 to get it, as I figured I would only live to be 66 and wanted to live a third of my life before making a decision that would affect the other 2/3rds and have never regretted it. My brother is in law enforcement and sports about 15-20 tats. I'm the f*** up musician with 1 and he's the family pride and joy with a ton. So different strokes, just make sure it is what you really want...

Re: What's sadder: Relic or tattoo

Plenty tattoos, none of them bands.

Statistically you'll probably like a band longer than you stay married, so it may be wiser to get a band logo than a wife's name inked in ..... or just stick with the kids' names.......

Divorce thread anyone?
