what's the longest your ears have been ringing?

It's been about 40 hours after a 7 hour concert (I had earplugs for half the time, but they fell out), and they are still ringing...the morning after the concert (yesterday morning) I went to the range to test out my new Charter .38 and my bro's SIG AR15 ( ) with ear protection and everything, and when I got out, the ringing was worse. I wasn't even at the gun range for very long, 30 minutes max. Shot maybe 20 rounds in each gun.

I've been to my fair share of metal concerts, most of the time without ear protection and the ringing hardly ever lasts till the next morning. As of right now, I cant really tell if it's getting worse or better. But I'm trying to avoid any loud sounds, or

I'm looking for answers online, and it's scaring the **** out of me. one guy said he has had permanent ringing in his ears after a van halen concert 20 years ago.

PLEASE tell me i'm okay?

Well, it's not good. I have heard that prolonged ringing is indicative of nerve damage, which doesn't get better. It's quite possible you have suffered some permanent hearing loss in the higher ranges. You should probably see a doctor.

You can tell if you're OK when the ringing is gone. The ringing is there to inform you that the ear has had enough.
If you're lucky = no permanent damage.
Most likely = slight tinnitus. Hopefully not permanent, it can come and go - relates to stress, noises around during the day. And you might wish you appreciated silence more when you could experience it.

This is how I experience it. It's not the end of the world.

I reckon you've done some damage.

When I started jamming with my last band I didn't use ear plugs for the first month or so. We weren't practicing that loudly, but because the room was small the volume was quite high. I had ringing for a fair while so I started religiously wearing plugs. The ringing died off after maybe a month or so, but I did definitely notice a slight degradation in my hearing.

If in doubt see your doctor.

I have tinnitus from my TMJ and from constant cluster migraines but I always try to not damage my ears.

Didn't Paul Gilbert and Eric Johnson go through this?

Did you notice a difference in your hearing afterward?

paul suffers from that, hence the noise-isolation headphones

best of luck, hope nothing nasty/permanent happens

You should go get a hearing test. It's not something to muck about with.

Re: what's the longest your ears have been ringing?

Pardon the ignorance of a non-musician-just-a-lowly-photographer, I mean zero disrespect and I'm totally asking because I'm seriously curious - I've wondered this for a long time:

Why play the music so loud that you have to wear ear plugs and/or it's painful and/or it destroys your ears (the thing you use to listen to music, ironically)?

Back in college, we had a band come to our house and rock the living room - they used equipment so loud NO ONE hung out in the room they played (well, okay, a few people did, but they all had ear plugs), but the party raged on the upper floor and in the basement where it was still loud enough to shake your bones, but not so loud that it caused you to grasp your ears to hold your brain in. They came back a few times (hey, the parties were fun) but always refused to turn it down a bit.

Help me understand.

Yeah I hate that too, I don't listen to my ipod loud or play guitar loud but in certain gigs you have to play at high lvls that can damage your ears. So that's when you need the earplugs.

Will I look like a total dork wearing earplugs to a concert? The Satch and Jeff Beck concerts I went to weren't so bad, but I'd imagine Dream Theater will be significantly louder.
