Where did guitar come from??

This is inspired from a thread titled "when were guitars made"

It just made me ponder.........when and where did stringed instruments come from and their origin in general??

And what did they use as strings??? Cave girl hair???

With all the highly knowledgeable brilliant minds here on Jemsite I'm thinking this could be quite educational

Well......???

Re: Where did guitar come from??

Well Jim, a long long time ago, the barbarians (much like yourself) were banging on drums and single-stringed instruments. Single-stringed instruments with the string connected to soundholes made of dried calabashes (a sort of pumpkin).

Anyway, one string became 2 and so forth. You'll note that we're up to 8 now.

The calabash stringed instrument is not to be confused with the mesapotanian lute as used by Homer and Plato, it's much much older.

So that's the history of the guitar for you, if you would like more information or would simply like a list of museums that house such artefacts, please PM me and I will gladly help.

Re: Where did guitar come from??

From what I remember from Music history...

The guitar was made and played long before organs, pianos or violins. Its ancestry stretches far back beyond the musical horizon, and variants of it are found all over the Orient. The Ancient Egyptians played simple stringed instruments, and the Greeks and Romans also made music by plucking strings with their fingers. Babylonia, clay plaques dated (1900-1800 B.C.), showed figures playing musical instruments, some of which bear a general resemblance to the guitar.

Sumerian culture left us stone tablets that describe the "helpers" of the Anunnaki - I think aliens had something to do with it too

Agreed, the Greeks probably perfected the idea of using math to determine string length and notes. However, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the ancient Orient and India has some predated that, or even Africa.

Ya know, seeing that you proceed myself on the evolutionary scale....I don't think you're in any posistion to call ME a Barbarian. On the other hand, I believe I have every right to call you a "Dang Monkey" and I'm going to the museum to see some of the ancient forms of guitars. It wouldn't surprise in the least to see YOU encased in glass posing with one
