windows xp pauses for 1 sec, every 5 seconds

I just noticed that my computer has started to pause for a split second every 3 to 5 seconds and this causes nightmares when i'm typing things, because whenever it pauses, it doesnt allow me to type so i constantly mispell words and have to go back to fix them. It didnt do his before.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to fix this, or what may be causing this?? I have an antivirus/firewall running(grisoft), and have scanned my pc for viruses, malware, spyware, but it is still doing it. I have windows xp.

I just restarted my pc, and it said AVG (grisoft antivirus program) is out of memory. Maybe it has something to do with this?

I dont know, i know there are some pc techs on here, so i hope some of you chime in, or maybe someone has the same issue and has a fix for this.

sounds like a memory leak & a program using 100% CPU.

start >> run type msconfig... startup tab. look for any suspicious programs that shouldn't be running.

then open taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and see what process is hogging CPU & memory.

I've noticed problems with this too - hey glen, what type of programs shouldn't or don't need to be running? It's a bunch of letters and numbers in there that I don't really recognize. Thanks!

google any .exe & process running that you're not sure of. first time thru it's annoying but you can quickly get to know what should and shouldn't be running. could be video driver or legit software too but start with malware... glen

also make sure all your drivers are up to date, I know on my pc my jmicron ide/raid drivers can make my computer pause and crash and screw up if they are not installed correctly. But mostly do that if you notice it more when you are doing something that causes stress on the hardware such as like load a disk or a big file. If it is literally all the time ever 5 seconds no matter what then it will most likely be fixed by what glen said Also download memtest and run that just in case it is a memory problem

Re: windows xp pauses for 1 sec, every 5 seconds

i went in task manager and under CPU column it shows in the 90's for system idle processes, is this normal?

what is considered an abnormal amount of Memory usage seen in the task manager processes, the highest i see is 26,484 K in the svchost.exe

That's normal, the amount of memory depends on what type of program, 26,000 isn't much though.

Is there any curcumstance where it's better or worse?

The rodent powering the PC has to have a break sometime, once every 5 seconds is a bit excessive though.

..buy a Mac!

The amount of shredding time you suddenly find yourself with after switching to a Mac and finding that you no longer have to arse about with stuff like this which the virus masquerading as an OS known as "Windows" throws up is really quite amazing.

Do it. Seriously. You wouldn't play a low-performance guitar like a Rickenbacker 330 - so why are you poncing about with Windows?

There, I said it.

Download CCleaner and run a scan. CCleaner will also let you clean up other system files, such as the page file to increase performace.

I tried this but it is still doing it. I don't see anything suspicious in task manager or msconfig. I tried different scans for spyware, virus, malware, registry cleaner, etc...... and it still does it.

I don't know anymore, could it be that my pc is needing a new hard drive?? It is a laptop harddrive (5400 rpms 100gb ATA-6), it is around two years old, but i still have around 45 Gigs free on it.

Anything else i can try before getting a new hard drive??
