Re: Winter Formal

The great divide between the US and the English speaking world is high school terminology.

Would a kind biligual American please provide a concise explanation of the following:

Prom. To the uninitiated, this appears to be a function where soulful young men lose their virginity to formerly haughty jockfollowing beauty queens, but only after fighting off drunken football stars. Later on, after the dance, all but one of the nubile young females are slaughtered in inventive fashion by a mask wearing maniac. Basically 'Prom' seems to be a misspelling of 'Porn'.

Homecoming: I absolutely have no clue what this means. However, after the dance, all but one of the nubile young females are slaughtered in inventive fashion by a mask wearing maniac. Apparently.

Winter formal. A formal dance during winter, perhaps? Seems to differ from the other two in that there has been no mention in this thread of slaughter, whether nubile young and female or otherwise. There does, however, appear to be a certain amount of breakdancing; slaughter would be preferable.

The US has many strange and wonderful words, but the only ones I've never had a proper explanation of are Prom and Homecoming. Please assist.

Re: Winter Formal

Homecoming is simply a time when all the alumni are invited back for a reunion, usually centered around a sports event of some type. For example, my school has a football homecoming and a basketball homecoming. Both weeks are centered around festivities, etc, although the football homecoming is noticeable more eventful.

Thankee sir - and Prom? And both of them have queens?

So as far as I see they're not both the same thing, in which case combining them into 'Promcoming' would be incorrect, and would probably refer to what happens on the back seat of dad's car/rented limo?
