Wireless broadband issues

Hi All,

Here's a different one from me!!!

At the moment, my wife and I have one PC in our house that we both use when we want to surf the net. However as we both have our own desktop PCs (it's my wife's that's currently connected to the net) and we have a laptop as well we thought seeing as how we live in the 21st centuty it might be an idea to hook up all the PCs to the internet.

We currently have a USB modem that plugs my wife's PC into the phone line. This seemed the most sensible solution at the time This PC doesn't have a wireless reciever in it, but both the laptop and the other PC do (we can detect all our neighbours's wireless signals)

What would you guys recommend as the best way to hook all 3 PCs up to the net?

You have to remember that I like my electronics to have valves in it and I have technophobia of my line 6 amp

Any basic advice gratefully received.

Dead easy.

Buy a wireless ADSL router and then 3 USB wireless adapters. Type your modem login details into your router and then install the 3 usb adapters. Put a security key on your network (via the router, really easy and straightforward once it's in front of you) then type the key into the 3 PC's and you're all set

Re: Wireless broadband issues

wireless router w/ built in switch.

i'm assuming your USB modem is a cable/dsl modem. connect that (via cat-5 network cable) to the router. you can add wifi cards to the desktops or direct wire them to the router... glen

Re: Wireless broadband issues

My modem is a grey box That's the limit of my PC knowledge!!!

So basically It's modem into router.

Then wireless pickup to PCs as needed OR hardwire one PC to the router (if it sits on the desk)

Re: Wireless broadband issues

If you can, try getting PCI (for the desktops) or PCMCIA (for the laptop) wireless adapters instead of their USB counterparts because
a) You might need that USB port
b) PCI / PCMCIA are supposedly more stable wireless adapters

But yeah, the wireless ADSL router is deffo the way to go!
