At the very most, the pop artist will give a chord progression or something.
(At least that's how I think it goes. If i'm completely wrong someone please correct me.)

Not to mention that some artists are 100% manufactured and brought up by the record company until they think the artist isn't 'hip' or whatever anymore. This includes the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, every other disney creation, etc.
I agree with what you are saying, but I was speaking more about pop music in general, not the musicians. The actual bands/performers are just images for the music. However that's not to say that every pop artist doesn't write their own music, some actually do (Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc.). I was just speaking about the general disrespect that a lot of non-pop enthusiasts have for pop music.

Anyways, this topic is about the Jonas Brothers. Sorry for deviating.

Tell me about it! The pop music industry is just sick.
It makes me cry thinking about how Hanson were just cast aside after the Jonas brothers (?) stole their limelight...

The Jonas Bothers had their original record contract (with Columbia) bought out by Disney and have been promoted heavily since; they weren't manufactured out of nothing by Disney the way all of the other radio Disney stars were. A few of them had several Broadway plays under their belts before they started writing music as well. They write their own tunes and play their own instruments. My daughters have pictures of them from right before they got really big, and they didn't have a whole band playing behind them like they do now. Still not anything like I would listen to myself, but clearly in a different league than all the other 'just sing this and smile' kids that Disney promotes.

Exactly. Most people that listen to music do not play an instrument.

They don't care about the technical difficulty of the guitar playing.

They don't care about the "guitar god" mentality.

Personally, I think a lot of guys spend too much time on the technical end as opposed to just creating something that sounds good. That's what most people care about.

Additionally, there is more to music than just guitar....believe it or not.

Oh yeah, who the hell are the Jonas Brothers? LOL!

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

Trully sad is people starving, animals being killed, this planet dieing and we going to another planet to....destroy it too.
About who's a guitar god....well I couldn't care less cause what matters to me is music and not technique. It doesn't matter how much technique you have if your music can't touch people.A perfect example is Batio, awesome technique but TERRIBLE music,it sounds like a bunch of glued exercises.
Trully sad is how this planet will be in 10 years.

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

I pointed out to my two young daughters while they were watching a Jonas Brothers "performance" that there was an actual band in the background playing the music.

My 10 year was kinda bummed actually and I felt bad. Kinda like letting her know there is no Santa (which I have NOT done).

I think the Jonas kids are still playing though, just turned down. My daughters love them, one is a total fanatic, but she doesn't think they are the epitome of what music can be. She just likes them, which is totally fine by me. At least they write their own songs, which most of the pop crowd doesn't do.

Jonas Brothers are nothing more than talentless skin puppets the record industry decided to market towards prepubescent teens. My hatred towards humanity is confirmed with each passing day.

Each to their own, I respect what every musician does and appreciate the difficulty in writing music in any genre. I dont have to like it, nor listen to it, but as a musician you must be open to all music of any level of technicality and spirituality...

My 3 cents :P

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

I swear I saw the Jonas Brothers in person years ago at some random event...

That said, I don't know any of their songs. I thought I knew what they looked like until I saw them on a magazine cover at the grocery store and realized my perception was outdated by probably 4 years.

Do they write their own songs? If so, I suppose that's neat. It's pretty rare for any corporate pop star to write even a few lyrics, let alone an entire song. From interviews and other stuff I've read, when a song gives writing credits to say Britney Spears with (insert studio writer here), it often means that Britney Spears has a concept for a song (I want an empowering breakup song) and maybe a few words here and there. The writer does the music, full lyrics, etc.

EDIT - Glen has it right. Not saying anyone should start liking the Jonas Brothers simply because the American public does. We must all realize that 99/100 people you meet on the street would either completely disregard or even insult you for bringing up Steve Vai or Dream Theater as enjoyable music. That said, my philosophy is generally if most people like it, it's probably not too clever.
