Wow. This is just sad.

It's truly sad when some people think one of the Jonas brothers is a guitar god.

Just look here at some of the peoples opinions. At least someone mentioned John Petrucci as a real guitar god.

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

Notice all the people who like him happen to have femme usernames

Just slightly off topic, but I find it strange that the more 'mainstream' a band gets, in terms of general popularity, the higher the % of female fans there is. Take a band like Children of Bodom for example, they have probably 20% or so female fans nowadays (and that's hella lot for a metal band). In the 90's, you wouldn't ever see a female at one of their shows. Same thing goes for Cannibal Corpse. Not to mention all them I see are fat and whiter than vanilla ice :\

And I really like that jonas pic in the thread, I could name ANY rock band (Seriously. Even Nickelback) and they rock out better than him.

I'm sick of those guys. My friends keep telling me "why don't you play a Jonas Brother's song? They're awesome!", and I say "F*ck it! Do you actually think they make music?". That's why I never say that I can play guitar, because people expect you to play famous songs that sometimes you don't like, and if you don't play them, then they say you suck. Only my best friends know I play guitar. Friends that, by the way, like the music that I like.

Yes it is unfortunate that teeny boppers only know what is dished out to them. I can't recally any Jonas bros song for good reason...i don't listen to garbage. It's a shame that popularity and $ales determine how good you are. I haven't listened to the radio in years for this reason. Steve Vai said something in an interview once that made perfect sense. It went something like this... I spent endless hours practicing, going to berklee, busting my butt, and the more popular guys are the ones rolling around on stage with their guitars.

It's a shame that the jonas jerks or nickelfu@@ are getting radio play. who's buying this garbage! or the diva garbage where the song is the same with just different lyrics by different diva wannabes. man, i'm going to stop now, getting really upset

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

you guys need to understand "guitar god" is an obsolete concept. a blip of the radar in time.

plus, sad to say, some of the pop music like that is more catchy to the average person than some "guitar god".

never underestimate how important public reception is to making art relevant... glen

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

I used to work in a record store. I received a fair number of warnings for taking Jonas Brothers and the Camp Rock soundtrack CD out of the rock section and moving it to pop.

Silliness aside, its popular because its practically the only thing close to rock (I use, "close" extremely loosely here) that youngsters have access to through mainstream music. Its this or pop (and not the awesome synth-pop of the 80's) or rap. Trust me on this, if someone wants to open up the boundaries and experience new music having come from the Jonas Brothers realm, they usually get blown away by what's available.

Going back to my days in the record store, we had a regular customer who was a Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montanna fan. I didn't bat an eye lid, its really not my place to say what someone should be listening to (its no-one's place to be making that call) and I especially shouldn't have been doing that when providing a service. However, I had a reputation as the "go-to guy" for rock amongst the staff. If a customer wanted a recommendation for hip hop, we'd fetch Ollie for advice, if it was rock, they'd fetch me.
So in comes our regular teeny-bubblegum-rock fan to pick up the Camp Rock soundtrack album, she stands around for a bit and asks for recommendations for more rock music. I wasn't sure where to go with this so I asked her, "More material like this? Or something with a bit more of an edge?"

"I don't know, what would you recommend?" A pile of CD's encompassing my entire childhood mounted up by the cash register. I talked her through the kind of material they were and offered to put a few on the in store stereo. Ten minutes later she walked out with some Queen, Van Halen and Cheap Trick records, easily accessible rock music that was susbtantially more inspiring.

Every week she came back, with another friend, clearing out our rock section. (Kind of a shame the company went bust a few months later)

My point is, yes the Jonas Brothers aren't the most inspired group in the world, far from it. But its easily and readily accessible to the kids, its popular thanks to some incredibly clever marketing. Don't pick on the fans, for all you know they really haven't heard much outside of the bubblegum rock universe and are naive as to what's out there, fair enough, let them enjoy it. For all you know a bunch of them might actually have been interested in looking up more talented artists eventually leading into a mass revival (through sales/legal downloads) of the kind of music we like here but have been put off doing so by people calling them out as idiots for their current taste in music. The <shredder> vs <bubblegum rocker> videos on youtube don't help things at all.

And to clarify, no I can't stand the Jonas Brothers. Garbage is my guilty pleasure, but they're pretty good.

Trully sad is people starving, animals being killed, this planet dieing and we going to another planet to....destroy it too.
About who's a guitar god....well I couldn't care less cause what matters to me is music and not technique. It doesn't matter how much technique you have if your music can't touch people.A perfect example is Batio, awesome technique but TERRIBLE music,it sounds like a bunch of glued exercises.
Trully sad is how this planet will be in 10 years.

Re: Wow. This is just sad.

I pointed out to my two young daughters while they were watching a Jonas Brothers "performance" that there was an actual band in the background playing the music.

My 10 year was kinda bummed actually and I felt bad. Kinda like letting her know there is no Santa (which I have NOT done).
