Re: best guitar wood?

I'm really surprised that mahogany is so popular. I thought some of the more exotic woods might have been higher rated.

Re: best guitar wood?

Basswood's my favorite overall just because it seems to bring everything out in my guitar, but after that I'd have to say Mahogany (a flame maple top on it is nice too, but that's TWO woods, isn't it?)

Re: best guitar wood?

Mahogany with maple cap has always been consitantly well rounded for me. If it was desert island time with only one guitar body, it would be this combo.

Re: best guitar wood?

Why is korina so much more expensive than the other woods??

I have one Alder bodied guitar, one basswood, and 2 with mystery woods, but I like them all. They each sound different and I play them all depending on what mood I'm in.

Re: best guitar wood?

I've always liked Mahogany myself.

Just prefer that dark, moody, thicker tone.

Re: best guitar wood?

I love the tone of a maple-capped mahogany Les Paul, but the guitar weighs a ton. I've always wanted to find an appropriate pickup that would, in combination with basswood, would give me that tone. I think that would be a really cool project. In the meantime, the lighter weight, the better (for me). I have a predisposition toward a bad back, so I want the guitars to be as light and comfortable as possible.

I once read that John Suhr is really intrigued by maple-capped basswood guitars. I think the Ernie Ball Axis guitar is maple-capped basswood, but I could be wrong.

Re: best guitar wood?

Hey dudes - check out the new Fender Showmaster guitars - flame ash tops on basswood, bubinga tops on basswood, flame maple tops on basswood, and a quilted maple top on basswood. Would be interesting to try . . . I saw one at a local shop a few weeks back. Cheers

I'm pretty sure that's correct. I like this combo too because basswood by itself is a little too nondescript, IMO. A maple cap adds a touch of brightness and punch that I like very much. The only thing I really hate about basswood is it's softness. Way too easy to damage. The light weight wins me over, though.

There are two types: White Korina and Black Korina, but the real name is Limba! This wood is from western Africa, and as far as I know it's actually not as rare as some make it out to be. I have no idea why it's so much more expensive than a lot of other woods. I like it a lot. It's not too heavy and it sounds superb. I would still put a cap on it, maybe spalted maple. It's a warm sounding wood.

Cool. Thanks, Dee! Man, you know everything. lol I like a warm sounding wood. I saw a flying V once on Eb@y that was made out of Korina. It was an Epiphone if my memory is serving me correctly. They wanted over a thousand dollars for it!! I thought, dang! For that money you could buy a Gibson!!

Jen, LOL I don't know everything! Far from it. I learn new things here daily, thanks to all the cool Jemsiter's. There's a vast amount of knowledge to be soaked up.

The Korina Gibson Explorer and Flying V are legendary!
