Bored of shred??

Seems like a hell of a lot of people all over the web are starting to thumb their nose at shred again. Personally I think it's from over-saturation. Either way, it still seems there is a huge amount of people still into it.

So are you bored of it or not? If so, why? If not... why?

Personally I LOVE IT, though it's got to be tasteful.. meaning I find 90% of You-tubers, Dean Shred-Searchers, etc. very boring indeed. Aside from those guys, bring the shred!

Re: Bored of shred??

I think that the problem is that there are certainly not many "tasteful" shredders around whose stuff is readily available. I'm talking technique COMBINED with a great ear for melody, awesome phrasing, great tone, etc. For me the #1 guy for that is Mr Andy Timmons. I spin his stuff almost every day. Another guy very capable of that in my opinion is Marco Sfogli, check out his album "There's Hope". But every time I hear a Vai album or a Satriani album (especially Satch's latest one) it's just more of the same. I have a couple of fave Vai songs (Tender Surrender, For the Love of God, Lotus Feet, etc) and some fave Satriani songs but overall I far prefer a guitarist like Andy Timmons. He has plenty of technique but he uses it sparingly where it fits best, and lets his songs breathe. That right there = my 2 cents.

It really depends though, I agree it has to be tasteful. I love stuff that is jazz fusion too that is almost shred like but still jazzy, like guthrie's stuff\

There is something about the lonestar's tone which I don't like in both Marco's and Andy's tone ^^^

Guthrie = awesome. And Andy played his lonestar 3 feet from me at the guitar clinic and I personally thought it was incredible. But hey, to each his own

Re: Bored of shred??

Like shreddersymphony said, people are growing tired of it because no one is doing anything tasteful and original. For instance, I've heard a bunch of new shred stuff, and yeah it's fast and it is "shred" I guess, but go back and listen to Dimebag's solos from Cowboys from Hell or Vulgar Display of Power. Not only does he have some gnarly shredding but at the same time he'll add in some soul which people are afraid to do.

Same thing goes for the first time I heard Cacophony. After that I immediately looked for all the Jason Becker stuff I could, cause he's one of the best. It's just a matter of being able to combine skill with something that people will want to listen to versus going "Heres these 18 minor pentatonic scales and then WHOA! 18 major pentatonic scales at 300bpm"

Re: Bored of shred??

When I was younger I thought it was great, now it doesnt keep my attention. I used to date a chick who played guitar and she always used to saying listening to shred stuff was like listening to math. Looking back at it I agree with her now. It's cool that the guys can play like that but most of it doesnt impress me because rarely is it involved in a good song. Petrucci, Yngwie, and Buckethead are awesome players. I still on occation listen to them, but really cant get through a whole album anymore. I'd take Eric Johnson or Paul Gilbert over them any day.

Re: Bored of shred??

I never cared for it myself. I didn't even know Paul Gilbert had a solo career until a couple of years ago. I bought GOOMY and then went backwards.

Never cared for YJM, or pretty much any of the "shredders".

Oh, and for the record, Paul Gilbert rocks.

Re: Bored of shred??

Yngwie used to have his **** together, then when the car crash happened and he toned it down but the amount of people buying stayed the same he was like "I can do half the quality and keep the cash flow the same" and ruined himself

My opinion anyways

Others like Buckethead, Gilbert, Petrucci, they've been great from the start and will stay that way

Re: Bored of shred??

wish yng would stop pouting in photo shoots! M.A.B just seems like a fairground attraction. Shred is great as long as is not just shred for shreds sake. As for those dean shred search muppets.....well....nuff said! Overall.... shred is as vital as any other atyle of play.

Re: Bored of shred??

I think it's just there's abundance of guys out there who can do all the sweeps and stuff at "xxxbpm," but when it comes down to it, they have no idea of phrasing or melody. It always cracks me up when I see a guy playing at gazillion notes-per-second, but once they hit a bend, it sounds like a dying cat.

And this is a little off topic, but doesn't it seem like an abundance of them are from South or Central America?

Re: Bored of shred??

I personally think Youtube is killing it. It's almost like it's put a magnifying glass on the problem that's been around since day one... people that think guitar-playing is a competition!

"I betcha can't play this!" Yeah? I 'betcha' people think you're a c*nt.

And doesn't that say it all? He can play 320bpm, yet nobody knows the name of 'the dude' (well, somebody might, but most won't.)

Found the video of that 320 bpm guy:

All I can say is, he's obviously had a hell of a lot of practice working out his wrist...
