Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

The other thing is that as a performing instrument, the electric, rock guitar isn't just a guitar.

It's a guitar and usually a backup, because by their very nature they're very fragile in that they go out of tune easily, strings break and so on. So that's say $2500 x 2 right there.

Then you need effects, lets say an Axe FX, because we want something pro quality, but not hand made by Bob Bradshaw. And probably a couple of decent stomp boxes, and a decent midi controller too. Another$3500 all in

Then we need and Amp, probably a 100 watter, I'm partial to Boogie, so a Mark V for $2000

Then some cabinets, a couple of 1x12 at just undeer $500 each and thats another grand.

So there's a basic semi pro setup and I've got a guitar, an amp and an effects unit...$10,000 - Soon adds up

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

I've owned JEMs and have played them on stage and I'm not a shredder. I just like JEMs, look, feel, tone & Vai. I wish I could shred, but I never put the practice time in to be able to, someday maybe. However, even though I am not a shredder, whenever I see someone playing or find out someone owns one, yes I do assume they are a shredder. Go figure.

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

I've found it's not just JS and JEM, but RG and S, as well. It seems people playing these guitars are typically more technically proficient. I think it's a residual effect of the late '80s/early '90s where almost every "shredder" played Ibanez. It seemed Ibanez dominated that genre then.

Totally correct. It's madness, if one thinks of it.

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

I have thought, from time to time, about a JS, S, or RG and though I tend to like note choice based playing never going over a medium/fast tempo, an Ibanez (or similar Jackson) shredder with thin neck would probably make me play fast since that type of guitar is most comfortable being driven that way.

They are like sports cars and it wouldn't make too much sense using it in the 35 mph zone on the back roads or lodged in city traffic.

That being said, many guitar players lose their musicality when they play too fast and often get out of context with the musicians they are playing with and speed could kill an already good guitarist's whole approach.

Some people have cash and will just buy it. I like baseball but can't play but would find a Giants bat a nice thing on the wall.

A Jem or JS is such a beautiful piece of art, even among guitars which are generally nice to look at. Why not have one of those on the wall, even if nobody plays if plenty out there are willing to buy a grand piano to use as nothing more than a stand for photos and vases.

There are ppl who hardly play a note and have all existing Jems just sitting there... o.O

But then again, who am I to judge them. (A car is not a guitar guys, come on! ) LOL

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

whenever i saw someone using JEM/JS guitars first thing in my mind i assume the guitarist likes the artist itself and willing to spend high amount of money for guitar...2nd,he might play at least some of the steve vai/joe sat music...might need to shred most of the time...ive never seen a blues or country player playing JEM/JS...shredders guitars are usually, floating bridge,22-24 frets, superstrat shape guitar, high output pups

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

interesting question...and now that i think about it...i probably do sort of assume the owner of a JEM or JS is a shredder or technically proficient...except in my case : )

being self-taught, i had already developed my bad habits and been out gigging pretty regular before it ever occurred to me that i might not be as "good" as other players...

my first love was rhythm anyway...
learning and playing tunes by scratching up my records setting the needle back to the same spot over and over until i got it...

i guess my JEM and JS gas just came from my appreciation of Joe and Steve...
definitely not because i cop their licks perfectly...

Re: Does JEM/JS = Shredder?

What surprises me is when I see a true shredder NOT using an Ibanez......

Tom Morello comes to mind.
