I always get stuff from itunes, but if it's a really good album I'll buy a copy from a store. Metallica do my head in though,I cant find anywhere to legally download some of their stuff, but don't like any album enough to buy the cd!

My girl works for a distributor, so downloading illegally might find me sleeping on the couch. LOL!
I also like physically walking through a record store, though Best Buy seems to be the only decent place to do this now. It's calming.
D/L'ing is a nice tool to find new music or checking out a band you heard about, but myspace is also good for that too. I got into Planet X, Killswitch, and Shadows Fall thanks to these forums and myspace.

Yeah, the excuse that downloading shouldn't be illegal (in order to provide a means of listening before buying) isn't really valid anymore, especially with the advent of MySpace and YouTube.

Yeah, that RAM crack had me scratching my head as well

I do listen to Pandora a lot, and occasionally hear someone on there that I end up getting into.

Re: Downloading...Wah joo tink? :?:

I used to download but I stopped

Rather just buy the album - you get all the tracks, sometimes bonus tracks and you're supporting the band (and the record company).

Also, it means i can just use a CD player in a stereo, without carrying an MP3 everywhere with a stereo cable. I still do that anyway though.

I haven't got a problem with people who download, I just feel they are missing out. Downloading is like the new version of just buying greatest hits albums

EDIT: Of course I only ever used to do free downloads through Limewire... I'm sure that if you were paying for it or maybe even just looking a bit harder you'd be able to find whole albums... But I can't and wont go back now. I like to have my music on a hard copy CD, with the proper alum cover and insert booklet... all that fancy stuff that you don't get when you download

Before they started that whole suing the DL'ers, I would DL a song or two of a band I feared I'd be wasting my $ on. If I liked it,then I'd go and buy the real thing.

I use you tube for that now. both you tube and DL are great for stumbling onto bands/songs you never would have chosen to listen to if you had to blindly buy it 1st.

Some of my favorite songs are from typing in something vauge like "Smoke" in the search query. I found a version of "Smoke gets in your eyes" by Boots Randolf (originally done by the Platters I believe) I saw the title, went "hmm.." and gave it a listen. I was blown away by the guy's phrasing! It was like if Eddie Van Halen was playing the sax. I play the song on my guitar like that now since asking Ed to do it would be a bit difficult..lol

Being a musician, it is hard to look in the mirror and tell myself that I wouldn't be a little mad if nobody bought my album, but it had 1,000,000( exaggerating..) DL's or views.

I have a method that suits me well. If a CD at XXX store costs $13.99 and there is only 6-9 tracks on it and they're not all in the range of 5 minutes long each, then I might get it from Itunes which has most albums in the $10 range or DL the song individually. But sometimes the length of the songs isn't listed on the CD, so its not always easy to tell. If it is a band I really like I'll take the chance.

I figure if I'm getting about 1 song or more per dollar I spend I feel my money was well spent.

Re: Downloading...Wah joo tink? :?:

Now here's a fight looking for a place to happen. I remember the early days of Napster when it was so new everyone couldn't resist. I had alot of discussions with both sides, and I always found that I supported both sides. Let me explain, I have downloaded songs I technically should have paid for, but once apon a time I had a killer album collection that I lost in a flood. Most of my downloads were replacing them, mostly one song at a time. Since I paid for them originally, was it illegal? Here's my other point. as I was seaching for alot of this stuff, a wonderful thing happened. I came across so much other music that I didn't know existed by alot of my favorite artists. Solo albums, collaborations, etc.. that it sent me on a CD buying spree. I had almost none at the time, and never liked to buy something I hadn't heard because you'd get one good song and the rest of the disc sucked! I got burned like that so much I gave up. So it cuts both ways, I guess.

If I hear a song on a tv ad or on the radio that I like the sound of, I will find out what it is, and conduct research in the form of downloading. If I'm sufficiently impressed, I'll go out and buy the album.

Re: Downloading...What do you think? :?:

I only steal what I can't buy, and then when I find it I'll buy it anyway. I almost always buy off iTunes but right now I'm stuck 'cos iTunes doesn't have Jason Becker! (Excluding tribute songs.) Hold the phone they added some Jason Becker!!!
