Re: Fastest Player.

I say John McLaughlin. Listen to he and Jeff Beck on the song "Django" from his Promise album. Unbelievable, clean, fast picking...without the "aid" of distortion. I've been playing for 23 years and realizing I would never have that level of picking technique made me ill!

Re: Fastest Player.

For straight up speed? Probably Michael Angelo Batio, but I don't think he's good. Yngwie's the same way, all they have going for them is speed and all we really needed from each of them was one run up one scale just to prove who's faster, anything past that is really boring.

Re: Fastest Player.

Fastest player? Easy. Allan Holdsworth. Consider the intervals and mind boggling stretches he does. No other guitar player is able to achieve that.

Play fast in the same spot on the neck = simple (and boring). Playing fast using wide intervals and string skipping plus strange note choices = not so simple.

Holdsworth owns all other guitarists. Period.

LOL! My dad could.

Malmsteen is a joke.

Listen to more Allan Holdsworth.

Re: Fastest Player.

I think Chris Impellitteri (not on the list???) is the fastest up there with Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth,Al Di Meola, Joe stump, Paul Gilbert and Shawn Lane...
I've seen a few clips posted on this site from that Rusty Coolley guy or whatever his name is and he is quite fast but I wasn't very impressed and I wouldn't put him on the above mention list.

I saw posts saying Eric Johnson?!? what the heck??? he is very fast and clean but nowhere near in that league...GET REAL PEOPLE!!!

Re: Fastest Player.

Hang on speed isnt everthing. Why play 1000000000000000 notes per second when you can just play1 . After all thats why BB king is so great. I mean lets take Michael angelo and yngwie. If they played a signiture lick, you could never determine who played it, its just fast shred. If BBking played a lick you would instantly know it was him. I just think its funny how everyone wants to be faster and faster-thats not musical thats just guitar insanity (good name for an album). I suppose thats why people like Stevie ray vaughan and BBking are actual great musicians not just guitar nuts..

I do agree.

That post was made over a year ago. Since then, I have been converted. Mmm........Holdsworth.....

That said, you guys really need to see some vids of Eric Johnson REALLY tearing it up. Some videos I've seen of him are much faster than his studio recordings. The guy's faster than people give him credit for.

I do actually have a list somewhere....

Ah, here it is....

Francesco Fareri sweeps 3 beats of an Am arpeggio at 33nps every chorus of "Suspension".

Rusty Cooley, 24.7nps on "Under The Influence" - legato and sweeping licks.

Ron Thal clocks in at an incredible 28 nps in the solo of the song "Hands".

Michael Angelo sweeps a few arpeggios in No Boundaries (2:01-2:05) using septuplets at 200, which is 23.3 nps

Steve Vai hits 21.6nps on "The Riddle"

Yngwie on "Blitzkrieg" hits 18.6 nps alt picked.

Gilbert on "Snakebite" hits sextuplets at 205 which is 20.5nps

John Petrucci, a la Dream Theatre, is a superconsistent 14nps guy.

Chris Impellitteri was hits 20.1nps on the solo of "Into The Light".

Frank Gambale has hit 19.3 nps on "6.8 Shaker".

Shawn Lane hits a phenominal 27nps in some recordings of his signiture diminished lick. Alternating rates of 6s and 9s at 180. Done both all picked and legato.

Allan Holdsworth hits 37nps, a 64th note run in the middle of Fred off the Tony Williams Lifetime album. Allegedly, Allan just had a moment of brilliance, which claims he could never repeat again.

Satch has hit 32nps live, like the Holdsworth number, this is a one off fluke.

Re: Fastest Player.

I disagree, coz i couldn't tell BB King from any other blues guitarist in that style.Depends on what you listen to.I personally think Yngwie is quite distinctive.I do agree with the fact that many guiarists are not easily distinguishable, but thats not solely down to speed! I also agree that speed isn't everything (bloody impressively fun though!! )

Re: Fastest Player.

Yngwie cant write songs for ****. Name me three all time great yngwie songs and ill buy you a house. That are truly musical masterpieces

Heres a few of BBkings
Thrill is gone
Riding with the king
hold on
Sweet little 16
Everyday I have the blues
When it all comes down
and many more....

Long live the king..

If you listen to blues a lot more(not saying you dont), however you'd recognise that the guitarists all have different styles, many that stray beyond the constraits of blues guitar.
Just take Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton the styles are far beyond eachothers..
