Re: Fastest Player.
It's cool that Ashton wants to move on and forget the argument. Arguing is silly, it's just music we're discussing, and we shouldn't ever fight about music. Music should bring us together, even if we disagree.
God... I'm such a hippy!

Re: Fastest Player.
Hi,
Just wanted to say that playing fast is not the Goal of the Road. In Bushido the goal is accumulating such Craft (over martial arts and weapons), that the actual (sword) fight can be prevented by the sheer projection of the Craft by the Master towards the opponent.
In guitar-playing, you can lean towards two sides:
Aspire to incredible (and yourself-overwhelming technique and forthcoming) playing and remain focussed on the actual execution of the music forgeting that you started out to play music, and that you have been converting yourself in sort of a gymnast on
steel strings
. And with what objective? To get laid? To impress people?
Or aspire to make the music you like, the one you hear in your head, and taking into regard the flaws of ones' technique as a motivator to obtain the goal of making the sounds in your head happen. By this way you make your music the reason itself to pursue guitar. And with whay objective? That of Creation, that of putting your personal skills into the music you hear in your head.
I've been on the first camp for years. Man, what a downer it is to shred an Yngwie tune and find yourself admitting to yourself that you're just reproducing the creations of others when you started out seeking something completely different.
Now I use my stuff to make happen that which I have in my Head. And I enjoy the blend of all these particular "styles" that has come into being as my own personal "library" to approach many different styles and tunes. I've become completely immune to the "well-intentioned" comments of others on my playing.
And, at this point, I'm 38 and play since my 6th, I'm VERY fast. But what does it mean to me? Zilch. My music should be in benefit of the piece played, not in benefit of playing 8+ notes per second to try to impress a public that, nowadays doesn't even understand the concept of playing fast as we (older) shredders do...
In the end:
It's very simple: You like it? Good. You thinks it sucks? Also very good! My own apprehension and motives for that which I create goes much deeper than the shredding-oriented Perspectives of others with which they evaluate my craft AND THEIR OWN)!!!).
Playing very fast can be a powerful manifestation of yourself though, when applied with taste and sobriety.
Anyway, enough of my ranting for now. I'm sure others puke with what I say here. It's, in the end, all a Matter of Perspective and nothing else.
Best regards,
D.
PD: So, what are you pursuing? 20+ notes per second or reaching out to people and become a part of their lives by making good music that reaches their souls or do you want to be known (just) by the speed of your licks?
It's up to you.
Who are You? What are you? And what the hell are you doing Here? Does your playing reflect this??? Music is, ultimately, a common state of mind. Nothing more. Until you make it happen with the equally-apprehending. So, make your goal just that: make your music happen with the equally-apprehending... Seek, and destroy all your doubts!

Re: Fastest Player.
AH!
Voting M.A.B without taking into regard that without YJM he wouldn't probably even exist, is a fallacy!
So I voted Yngwie, yes.
I don't know, but the comparation of "Freight train" to "Now your ships are burned" is as meaningless as comparing a Rembrand and a Dali in this regard.
Yngwie is, and will be forever, a Master and he should be respected as the artist that created and set the whole "Neo-classical" style in motion.
He deserves his place in the Gallery of Great Guitarists. The man opened the way for a commonly-accepted unique style and approach.
Somehow, this approach seems to be bashed from time to time. And to add to this personally, I find Yngwie quite a "grown-up child". But that's just my opinion... This "kid", anyway you take it, has come a long way, and remains an undeniable MAIN source of inspiration for many guitarist now, and in the future.
So, HAIL YNGWIE MALMSTEEN!!!
On a sidenote, How does one establish the speed of a guitarist, and in what context? I mean, how many notes could Dave Martone be spilling when he goes haywire live? He's surely playing the same or a lot more notes than Yngwie and many other neo-classical guitar-slingers at some time. Where's the limit in tapping? We'll know for sure in the future, by (now still infantile but already shredding phenomenal) guitar-slingers that grew up with Satriani, Malmsteen, Vai, Hendrix, M.A.B., and you name them...
In any case, playing fast is, IMHO, meaningless if there's no musical purpose behind the performance.
That's why I find the PG solos a bit odd. It's cool he can make a triplet so unique and well executed. But, for that reason, I'D prefer Buckethead who makes every conventional guitarist look into himself by his odd preferences and unconditioned shredding. :-D
As a sidenote, I find
Guthrie Govan
's "Rhode Island Shred" much more impressing than most of the "shred" stuff I hear nowadays. But I always stay tuned for a
Rusty Cooley
shred... He's awesome!!! They should measure his picking speed, if that's what it's about nowadays.
Best regards,
D.

Naw, that's not possible Tommy
Glad to see this "OLD" thread is getting back on track. I voted soo long ago I can't even remember WHO I voted for, but I'm pretty sure it it was Michael Angelo.
Now......what was that old song??
"Why can't we be friends" Some great riffs in that one

Re: Fastest Player.
Since this thread's been brought back, i'll throw in my knowledge. The fastest guitarist I know of is Francesco Fareri who reached 33nps on the song Suspension.
