Re: Fastest Player.

Well Satch is apparently the fastest recorded, 32nps playing live, but that's a one off so that doesn't really count. Vai apparently did 17-18nps some time in the 80's, can't remember where I heard that. To me, Petrucci SOUNDS the fastest because his tone is so clean all of the notes are audible, even though he probably isn't actually playing the fastest. Shawn Lane is hands down the fastest I've heard, easily, problem is he didn't sound all that good when he was playing that fast, he sounded so much better at a slower pace. Paul Gilbert sounds very fast too, but same as Petrucci, he is super clean, so even if he isn't playing REALLY fast it'll sound really fast. I can't decide.. but technically I think Lane was the fastest consistantly. Michael Angelo isn't that fast, again, he is VERY clean so it sounds faster. I thought his record was 16 or 17nps.

Re: Fastest Player.

It's all about the technique here. The five fastest guitarists I know of have all achieved the speed using sweeping and/or legato and/or tapping. Fastest alt picker to my knowledge is Jason Becker, 22.17nps on Paganini's 5th Caprice. As for Vai, 21.6nps on The Riddle, legato and tapping.

If he had used all four, he could not have been held responsible for the catastrophic results.

Like petrucci said, destryoing the planet is bad for record sales.

Impellitteri rocks \00/ he is so metal

Re: Fastest Player.

LOL, just to clarify, i'm not THAT anal about speed at all. Just know a few people who have slowed songs down and came up with those results. Got me a nice little list of some fast players.

Re: Fastest Player.

lol no one can practice chromatics at excess of 250 +++ bpm in 16th notes on an acoustic like John McLaughlin...

Francesco Fareri is pretty damn fast too,

Chris Impelliteri fails to impress me...

Re: Fastest Player.

Why is there never a poll for the slowest guitar player.

The idea that there are people out there calculating nps and others quoting it is *scary*. There are plenty of fast guitarists out there; far fewer good guitarists. There's a big difference. I can play pretty fast; claiming myself as good would be a stretch.

Re: Fastest Player.

LOL, well said. Yeah, how 'bout a "Most Musical Guitarist" poll. Then we could finally have the definitive answer we all seek

it is sort of the same thing as winky envey . i can play faster then you so i am a better person with a bigger winky, but it is just the oposite

no seriously , your right . i think it is easy to play fast , it is a totaly different story to play with feeling and precision and use speed as a tension builder or accent .
i know speed is easy because i can play it , i am not that great of a guitar player by any means .

LOL, technically, I can play over 175 notes in less than a second on my seven string.

Yep. Most decent guitarists can ape most anything. But being able to create *good* "musical, lyrical" original material or improv well, that's the holy grail of guitaring.

But if you are trying to entertain a cross section of people and ages, shredding is going to turn them off. Something slower that's more musical will almost always get a positive response from everyone every time though, even if it's slow. Even the shred fans usually dig it. And for them, as you mentioned, you could just do a quick half bar or bar of shred just to let them know you have the secret power.
