Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

This is hard to say, I always thought Vai, just filled in for that one album, and didnt write the music, just add the Vai touch... ???

Yes, John Sykes was Whitesnake.

I've got a feeling Steve's going to win this one, i can't for the love of god think why that is I think his playing on Slip Of the Tongue was amazing, you can just tell Vai's all over that record, same with Sykes though on 1987

Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

Sykes fit WS better, and wrote some of the best songs. Vai didn't write anything on SOTT, he only re-recorded the guitar parts, I do like that disc BTW, I just think Sykes fit the straight up, heavy blues rock thing better.

Doug Aldrich is great with them too, check out the new Live in the Still of the Night DVD!

John only recorded one album with Whitesnake - 1987 which he co-wrote with Coverdale, Vanderberg wrote all/at best most of the music for Slip Of The Tongue because of some arm injury so lil Stevie played his parts for the album although judging for the sound of it, Vai wrote most of the lead work

I must get that DVD soon, seeing them soon aswell Doug Aldrich is a fantastic player and suites playing other peoples parts great in Whitesnake, he does a great job don't get me wrong but i don't think his style is unique as with former players like Cambell, Sykes, Vai, Marsden .e.t.c. His style reminds me of a mix between Sykes and Wylde

that's because a good number of people will vote for vai no matter what the question is (this is jemsite after all). that being said, sykes was the man when it came to whitesnake. i thought the sound was much more aggressive and less produced sounding. vai sounded ok in whitesnake, but that album was nothing special imo. vai was much better in dlr, imo.

Can't stand whitesnake (each to their own though),thought Vai only did it for some pocket money.I personally didn't feel his playing suited the music and vice versa.(sap rock Hehe!!).So i voted Vai coz the others have never inspired me!!

Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

Vai made the biggest impact with the birth of the Ibz UV 7string in White Snake, but i liked all the players mentioned in this pole.

Vai got my vote, just think if Satch was in White Snake, what would it of sounded like with his playing?

Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

I think Slip Of The Tongue is great and i'd like to see any other f*cker try to play those songs as good as Steve did. I cant understand why people knock that album, nearly every band goes through line-up changes, WS have had a fair few, I think people only criticise that album cos they know Vai is on it and they know Vai's style and the stigma that he's carried with him.

Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

I liked various versions of WS, but tongue wasn't very good, IMO. I think Vai, great as he is, didn't fit the style well. Plus, the whole feel was "Whitesnake II" - trying to make a clone of the megahit. Like most sequels, it fell far short.

Re: Faviroute Whitesnake Guitarist

Well i voted for Ad van den Berg. For the sake of the Dutch! lol
He's one of Hollands best guitarist i think, and i'm more familliar with his work than the other blokes, (well except Vai, but to me his work with whitesnake wasn't his best...) so i couldn't vote entirely fair... But show the Dutch some love!
