Favorite EVH Rip Off

Ok, I know they aren't "rip offs" but basically just people who were EXTREMELY influenced by his style, and carried this style throughout the 80s. Report any missing ones...

Re: Favorite EVH Rip Off

Jake E. Lee, by far. He's one HELL of a guitarist, and is totally underrated. He's one of my all time favorite guitarists.

The Ultimate Sin was actually the album that made me wanna pick up the guitar in the first place.

Anyways, Randy Rhoads shouldn't be on there. He did not like Ed. He said his playing was "all smoke and mirrors".

From what I heard he went to Van Halen's concerts everytime they were in town to borrow licks, and Eddy did the same to him...But I am probably wrong. TY for the heads up.

I'll have to look that up. I was really surprised myself when I read that Randy didn't like Ed's playing.

Re: Favorite EVH Rip Off

The only thing Vai really ripped off of EVH was the whammy abuse, and even then, he could have taken it from Hendrix, who was an obvious influence on Vai. Plus, Vai was one of the first to pull up on his Floyd. Also, Vai's playing is very modal, unlike EVH's pentatonic approach.

My favorite of those, excluding Vai and Randy, who debuted around the same time as EVH, and sound nothing like him, is George Lynch. Not only is his playing awesome, he looks like he's in his 30s, despite the fact that he's at least 50.

Re: Favorite EVH Rip Off

To me only Vito Brata is a EVH rip off. The others have more of a personal style, albeit influenced by Ed.

Re: Favorite EVH Rip Off

Vito??? Come on Mark, his style is light years from EVH. If anything, Vito skipped right past the whole pentatonic zone where Ed was stuck in.

This is a strange thread and none of them are rips offs and all have their own style. There is no substance in this poll. In fact none of them particularly reminds me of Ed's playing at all.

EVERYBODY is infulenced by somebody and just because a player loves whammy abuse or does a lot of tapping doesn't make him a rip off or even a fan of EVH's playing

George Lynch??? Does he sound like Ed??? Maybe I'm just deaf R.R. style is (was) as far from Ed's as you can get!!

There's my 2 cent (not that ya asked for it)

Yeah, i thought all that stuff too, but instead of getting into an apologetics discourse, i figured it would be more fun to just add to the pile!!!

while we're at it, hows about adding
Derek Friggo-LeMans, Enuff-Z-Enuff
Nuno Bettencort-Extreme

Lol...

I guess I'm easily confused, (duh) Comprehension isn't one of my strong points

But are we taking favoruite 80's era shred guitarists here?? Or people influenced by Eddie with similiar playing styles???

If so, I don't see that in Nuno AT ALL, either

"still confused"

That's ok,Bro!!! Hopefully, we're all just having fun here!!!

Actually, i didn't even take part in the poll, but the OP mentioned reporting missing Van Halen influenced axters!!! i just thought i'd dig the ditch a lil deeper!!!:P

None of the folks i mentioned are currently "favorites" of mine, but i think we can assume that tapping and maybe whammy bar abuse were big parts of their arsenals!!! i'm not sure if Nuno was a heavy whammy shaker or not, but i Loved where he took the tapping thang, and the sped up "Cathedral" like echo on the "Bumble Bee" solo was priceless!!!

Re: Favorite EVH Rip Off

Well I voted for Vito as my favourite, but I believe his talent level is far higher than eddies* and tapping techniques more complicated. Just listen to tracks like Wait, Little Fighter and If my Mind is Evil, or any white lion tracks really. I thought he sounded great.

But the truth is I love pretty much all of those mentioned, to the point where I would say some of them would make my "top 10" list. Vai, Lynch and DeMartini are some of my favourites. However I don't feel any of them are EVH rip offs. Lynch sounded very different, his sound was darker and more processed than Eddies, which always sounded very raw. DeMartini has very simmilar tone to eddie, as was his playing, but I think that his work was often more original and interesting. As for Vai, well he said himself that he was influenced by Eddie, but felt that his style had evolved to the point where he had developed his own style and originality.

I also feel that Rhoads, Beach and Lee don't deserve to be stuck with the EVH rip off label, but maybe that is just me. I do after all, love hair metal

*Well I really feel most of Van Halen (NOT HAGAR!**) is quite mediocre. The only real solid album is the debut. The others have a few good tunes, but then too many bad ones.

**Sorry, another edit. This meaning I hate Van Hagar, not the work in the Hagar era is not mediocre. Just had to make that clear.

Steve Lynch came up with his tapping technique around the same time as EVH, actually. At least, that's what he said in an interview he did with BOSS on their podcast.
