Re: Favorite musical era/decade

I can't say much about the 70's because I grew up musically in the 80's, which really rocked, so the choice is a no-brainer for many musicians. Plus, there's been a clear decline in quality of music and bands after the early to mid 90's.

80's here. Given this is Jemsite, not shocked that the 80's are winning. Now if this was Fender or Gibson site im sure the 60's 70's would be winning.

The 70's, with the 80's and 90's close behind. This decade has been very bland by comparison.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

No way that I can pick a particular decade. All had a lot of crap music released in them, and there's always plenty of good stuff released too when you look.

There is no best or good decade, just good music.

80's for me as well, great music and my football team was the best around in England
Although must give a mention to the 90's for some of the music as well

Either the '90s or now. I picked now, since most of my favorite bands are still active.

I would argue that 1969 was the single greatest year for pop/rock music, ever.

80s, but more the tail end of punk/early goth stuff for me. The women weren't hot, but you couldn't tell under all the make up.

Fishnet stockings, oh yes.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

80's is my favorite, followed closely by the 70's.

High school in the 1980's was incredibly fun. The mood was very upbeat. The sky was the limit, and *Everyone* liked music and played an instrument. There were jam sessions everywhere, and everyone dreampt of playing in a good band. And the women were nuts about guys who played an instrument. We used to write songs on the bus on the way home from school. Ironically, at the time, I mostly listened to 70s music, but it was all good stuff.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

80's for me as well.

I went from 10 to 20 in that decade, and it's when I picked up a guitar.

The 80's gave us Satch, Vai, Yngwie, Rhoads, with great additions from Priest, Maiden, Scorpions, Van Halen, etc.

Sure Depeche Mode and Madonna are mixed in as well, but even that couldn't drag down the overall guitar-centric nature of the decade.

70's were a close second.

I hated almost everything mainstream released in the 90's.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

I went 90s- my favorite time for both shred, metal, grunge, and even hip hop was better. Especially the early part of the decade. Actually, if I could get a 88-95 I'd be all over it!

Well at this point only 12.77% of the people on this site are right on the money, and 6.38% are very close to perfectly right...

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

I chose 90s. But many people in here are right, its hard to say because every decade has had its share of crap as well as good stuff. Ill list some of the best 90s bands grouped by musical stylings. these lists could go on forever so i just chose a few bands to represent each distinct style. I left off a lot of the obvious shred albums that you all would normally pick, so dont wonder why any of those are missing

Early 90s Indie Rock Movement
----------------------------
pavement
fugazi
and you will know us by the trail of dead
the dismemberment plan

Mid-90s post-punk bands
---------------------------
braid
glassjaw
at the drive in

last line of "emo" bands tied to the original connotation (has basically NOTHING to do with the term now)
------------------------------
sunny day real estate
cap'n jazz
the promise ring
get up kids
etc.

progressive ambinet/experimental rock / avant garde
-------------------------------------
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Thee Silver Mt. Zion...
mogwai
sigur ros

decent "nu-metal" bands (yes i HATE this term and I hate lumping bands in here so bare with me on this)
----------------------------
deftones
incubus
rage against the machine (just threw them in this one)
tool...and thats about it in this category :P but I do like these 3 bands (HATED korn and limp bizkit etc.)

late 90s "metalcore"
-------------------
shai hulud
hopesfall
poison the well
prayer for cleansing

late 90s indie rock
---------------------
red animal war
death cab for cutie
the white octave

"grunge" (i am not a big fan of this title either but once again im grouping for convenience)
--------------------------
smashing pumpkins
nirvana
soundgarden

90s hardcore punk (a throwback to early 80s)
--------------------------
madball
integrity
sick of it all

ska
------------
Voodoo Glowskulls
suicide machines

In a category of their own:
----------------------------
Radiohead

I could go on and on, but the 90s exploded with diversification that hadnt been seen by the masses until that point imo. And besides leaving out most of the obvious metal, i also left out groups like the pixies, sonic youth, and the meat puppets etc. that all did not start in the 90s but were still going into and in some cases through the 90s.

I was lucky to have a dad and neighbor who loved to scout out for bands flying under the radar and I continued that tradition with the use of the internet in middle school, high school, college, and still now myself. Luckily I was exposed to all the classics from their record collection as well, but I still love the 90s.
