Re: Favorite musical era/decade

oh and also, the 00's have been fairly impressive so far as well, however I can't even begin to compare it to other decades when it has 2 more years to finish, and then at least 5 more to see how it really stacks up when looking back :P

Sometimes I want to go back in time to 80'th...

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

mid to late 1970's (Queen, Cheap Trick, ELO, Frampton, and all the other groovy arena rock from that era) is probably my favorite in general.

I have a special place in my heart for SOME 1980's hair metal, and 1980's "mod" synthpop (Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths), as well as vintage Metallica (circa 1980 until about 1987 or so). But the ,70's rock is where it's "at". Oh, and did I mention I unapologetically love ABBA?

I mostly ignored the music scene in the '90's, because it mostly sucked donkey testicles (in my opinion, anyway). The current decade started out pretty crappy, but it's gotten somewhat better...mostly because the '70's/'80's rock ethic has come back into style. Call me crazy, but I tend to like at least a little bit of actual MUSICIANSHIP with my music, even if it's overwrought and over-the-top musicianship.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

the problem with the 90s and even today for most people is that he best music existed under the radar. I probably own a good 200+ albums from artists just in the 90s but maybe 15 of the artists (or less) were any that were ever on the radio or MTV.

the 90s was just the downfall of the popular music industry as it transitioned from the radio playing good music to only looking for money and most of the good artists from 90s on are not on the radio or MTV or playing stadiums etc.

You have to admit that some of the most timeless stuff came from the 60's and 70's.
I love a lot of what came out after, but if you listen to the 80's music the trend seemed almost comical with respect to rock. Very formulaic.
90's and beyond I think there is so much diversity and integration happening that there is a lot more to choose from. Indie artists are finding their way with Myspace and the like, the record industry keeps churning out its formula bands, and the future is unclear. It's anybody's guess which way things will go.

I feel the same way about the 80s. While there were a LOT of good bands, there was also a lot of trash and copycat bands with no real originality. very formulaic.

And also I agree with you obviously about the 90s - now with the diversity and having so much more to choose from. I love it. I dont ever listen to the radio AT ALL anymore on my own terms (sometimes im with friends who do or out at bars etc) so all the music I find is on my own terms at shows and last.fm and myspace and there are so many talented groups out at the moment. I love it personally.

It was a tough choice, but I went 80's. 70's was a very close second though. I was only born in 86 so it's difficult for me to judge 100%, but the 80's just wins for me.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

I'm going to have to say definitely 80s, although that was also the era I grew up on music.

The way I see the "classic rock" era of the 70s laid the foundation for a lot of the hark rock, pop and metal greatness that was the 80s. 90s became a downhill slide with the birth of "grunge" (sudder) and techo. Now in the 2000s we're left with mostly the young pop *tarts* (the Britney Spears clones) and the craptacular Nickleback (groan) and numerous generic sounding deratives.

So 80s for me, with 70s coming in 2nd I guess. Nothing in the 90s and beyond come close IMO.

I disagree with your statement because there were musicians in the 60's and 70's that were formulaic and mass marketed too!!! Everybody has copied everybody, there isn't anything really original out there just different stages of evolution throughout the decades of the the same music that became known as Rock 'n' Roll.
What I can acknowledge about the 60'S and 70'S is that an Important blueprint was established that future bands would build upon, which brings us to the "innovators" that we all know and love from those eras, however, you could never call them originators every musician from any genere has built upon on what has already been created and even if you hate to admit it many innovators came up in the 80's too, and great music was created that is why so many people have nostagia about that decade more than any other, if it had been crap as you'd like to believe, it would not have reached anybody.

Re: Favorite musical era/decade

I'd definitely venture to say the artistic merit of the music (after all, music is an artform) of the 70s was, in general, far greater than that of the 80s. Like bammbamm said, the 80s was the most formulaic period of all, especially the late 80s. Barely any of the rock music of the 70s sounded as close to one another as the ballads of the 80s did. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of music from the 80s that's really enjoyable to listen to (my favorite guitar players come from the 80s), but much of it was extremely cheesy and overly imaged-based. That's just my two cents.

True, dat.

There's a reason why ABBA has retained its popularity after all this time. Those folks were astounding musicians and singers, and their songwriting (while campy and over the top) was top-notch.

You know that song "Thank You for the Music"? I've been toying with the idea of putting together an instrumental version of that song (replacing all the piano and vocal tracks with guitar, natch'). There's just stuff that's fun to play AND listen to.

For me the late 70's were the best. Classic Van Halen, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Rush, Sabbath,etc... The scene was wasn't saturated with crap like it is these days. You could listen to every song on every album and love them all.
