Question

Favorite scales?

Other than the blues scale, I really love Lydian and Phrygian dominant. They're great!

Re: Favorite scales?

One thing I was messing around with the other day, was the Lydian scale, but with the major 7th replaced with the minor 7th. It sounds very strange.

Re: Favorite scales?

Interesting. I thought Phrygian dominant was referred to as the Gypsy scale. But it's different. I'm going to check that out.

also lately I've been noticing a lot of my scales I use from liking the sound of em (never know the names of em if they have been named) are based around the harmonic minor scale.

Re: Favorite scales?

Yeah, Phrygian dominant, which I like a lot, is also a mode of the harmonic minor scale.

That's an interesting page, Newbie (freakguitar). There are a lot of scales there I never heard of.

Re: Favorite scales?

So far Lydian is leading the poll... I think that's Steve Vai's favorite scale, if I'm not mistaking.

Yeah, I hear Eddie van Halen does that, too. He just uses the chromatic scale.

I prefer using scales. It's much clearer to me.

Re: Favorite scales?

I don't really have a preference on scales. They're basically tools for me to create with. I use different ones based on what I want to do.

Re: Favorite scales?

I try to learn scales but alot of the time i play by ear, was great for the first few years, but when i started writing and composing my own stuff for bands, i found i really missed the scales when it came to writing the solos.

I like the sound of Aeolian for slower runs tho, sounds kinda strange but cool :P
