Re: Fretboards and why?
I used to like maples better because I thought I played better for some reason on maples. However, I think I like the sound better on rosewoods and now I seem to be playing just as good on rosewoods (maybe it's in my head).

Re: Fretboards and why?
I've always found maple more comfortable to play, though I think ebony tends to look better.

Re: Fretboards and why?
I kind of like them all but most of my fiddles are rosewood. I have one maple board. I like the look of rosewood mostly. But then I like maple too. I can't decide! One of each please. Nothing wrong with ebony or "other" either.

Re: Fretboards and why?
Yeah I like the feel of maple and ebony, but rosewood seems more functional. Its not as hard and plastic feeling as ebony, and not as bright as maple. Both my current guitars are rosewood so thats what I voted.

Re: Fretboards and why?
They are all good and bad in different ways.
Personally I lean towards rosewood, but I am just as happy to play a guitar with an ebony, maple or "other" fretboard.
Rock on!

Re: Fretboards and why?
rosewood: just has a good feel.
ebony: close 2nd, but rosewood just feels "softer" to the touch, donno how to explain it. its just the feel.
maple: I had one really good maple board on a fender
mexican strat
, it blew me away. but since then all other maple's I have tried (never had a JEM with maple) tend to be to "sticky" for my vibrato. (again just the feel)
but anything is very subjective, so I guess if you are wired that way, have it that way...

Re: Fretboards and why?
I'm all for ebony and maple.
My main concern with rosewood is that it's porosity is reflected too clearly when playing cleans (it just sounds like rubber). I like the high-end sparkle that ebony and maple give to my sound.

Re: Fretboards and why?
It's got to be ebony with maple coming a close second. I love the brightness and clean feel you get from them.
Though I don't hate rosewood

Re: Fretboards and why?
Most of my guitars have rosewood, but the two I like best are Ebony. I have a couple of maples and maybe I'd put that 3rd.

Re: Fretboards and why?
For rock/metal guitars, I definitely prefer maple. I like the clarity it adds to the sound.

Re: Fretboards and why?
I've got my first
maple fretboard
-ed guitar, since my first ever
electric guitar
(cheapo Cort Strat clone 16 years ago) in my RG20th, and I'm loving it. All my other guitars are rosewood.
I'm not sure if it's just that this is a new one, but it feels so good, and sounds great too!
