I remember this one video I saw, the guy did an amazing job on the solo with the tapping and sweep picking, and then it got to a part of the song where he just had to play simple power chords. He sounded terrible, he whacked the guitar as hard as he could, so the strings banged into the frets, so his tone was terrible and he had pretty much no sustain.

Kind of sad to think someone spent all that time learning all the really complicated flashy solo tricks, but he can't make simple power chords sound decent.

Well, YouTube has made me realize that I'm by no means the fastest player around :P I might be the fastest guitarist in school, making me the "shredder"/"w*anker" of the school but I'm nowhere near some peoples notes per second.

but..

What I've realized is that I have a rather nice tone comepared to ALOT of guys on youtube! Most of those I've seen are fast. And that's it. They don't play with feeling at all, to me it sounds like machines or something!

So well, Youtube's made me realize that I have a real good tone from my hands

Theres a lot of really good people that make me think i suck.
But then theres a ton of people taht are descent that make me feel good about myself. lol

Actually, there's another side to this medal. Youtube made me realize that some people out there suck much worse.

Through youtube, I've come to the realization that I'm very glad that I don't live up to the teenage shredder stereotype (anymore). There are lots of kids wasting their time. They need to stop practicing chops so much and work on music.
This time last year, I was one of those kids, but it feels odd to even think about it. I've musically matured a whole lot this year, and I'm so glad I did. Practicing chops, though essential, and I DO work on it still, gets very boring after at most an hour. And that's all you need. What a good musician should work on is ear training (transcribing songs/solos) and then learning the theory behind it, and then adding any cool licks to his bag of tricks, therefore furthering the chops practice. But straight up chops music/guitar music/shred just bores me to tears. It only blows me away if it's a guy like Rusty Cooley or that one video of Shawn Lane with his Ghostrider Voodoo Cowboy just shredding away to all hell. Then, shred is no longer meaningless notes, it's a weapon.

I don't think I suck necessarily. I've always thought I could hold my own, but what YouTube has done for me has shown just how many talented individuals there are out there, and how there are aspects of my own playing I could improve on just to be "on par"

I was unsure of what to vote. It hasn't made me realize I suck, as there's always been plenty of bedroom shredders in the world (I was one for years). Were my intended goal to be nothing but a speed player, I might have voted that I suck. I'd rather write good/interesting songs though.

While there are hundreds of guys on there that can spank me up and down the fretboard, there are also even more guys that suck beyond belief.

Just type in "smells like teen spirit guitar covers" and see what I mean. It shows you that you may not be near the best, but you're sure as hell not near the worst either.
