Re: HH vs HSH

I generally prefer H-H, I'm usually hitting the middle single coil with my pick. Plus, more recently, I have come to the realization that I'm just not going to get SRV-type tone on a Ibanez, which would be the only reason for me to use the middle s/c.

Trower

SRV
(and every other blues rock player, Buddy Guy, etc...)
Eric Johnson
Timmons
Vinnie Moore
Yngwie
Paul Gilbert nowadays

Although some of the latter use single coil humless pickups, the tone is still gnerally single coil-ish.

Re: HH vs HSH

I like a variety of tone. My first custom guitar is SSH, my 2nd is HSH, I have a strat that's SSS, and my third custom is going to be HH. Nothing wrong with havin' em all

Re: HH vs HSH

time to revive this cool debate!

Im split to tell ya the truth..as a devoted lover of the S540LTD I absolutely drool over HSH guitar since 14-15 yrs old, and that was 15 yrs ago!

and I like all the tones in a HSH or even HH config..alot of people say they dont use the middle positions.. I tend to think its a best of both worlds thing.. kinda bright and thin at the bridge, warm and fat at the neck, and smooth mixed and even kinda glassy in the center. depending on course how its wired up etc etc.

That said- I also find myself always hitting the single coil with my pick in a HSH config.

so I would have to say overall HH.. but HSH is a very close second.
only cause as much as I love tonal options.. I cant let it interfere with my playing/picking style/comfort.

Re: HH vs HSH

HH for me. Because of the fact that the middle pickup... You guessed it; gets in the way of my picking from time to time. Some HSH guitars have their 'S' lowered, so it's no longer a problem but I like not having a single coil out there. Also, aesthetically, I really like HH. I like the look of it, which is also important to me. But I can get pretty much all the sounds I need with an HH configuration in combination with a 5-way superswitch and a coil splitting pot, so.. HH for me.

Re: HH vs HSH

i gave up on hsh a LONG time ago. for me, the perfect clean tone a strat in the 4th position, but i have never been able to get that out of an ibanez. it always sounds way too thin and anemic. (and yes, the phase was correct. ha ha.) plus i kept hiting it with my pick, and by the time you lower it enough to get it out of the way, the sound is adversely affected. NOW i prefer HH with a 3 way switch augmented with a push pull vol pot to tap the neck humbucker. not a bad clean tone at all.

Re: HH vs HSH

I like HSH on floyd guitars but prefer HH on fixed bridges. I used all 5 positions on an HSH. On fixed bridges I usually keep the bridge on and maybe will switch to the neck humbucker for cleaner tones, or for reggae or funkier stuff.
